Although Japan has an advanced, high-tech society, and is a leader in robotics and AI, the nation continues to embrace a high level of cash usage. It is very common for small and medium businesses to have signs saying “cash only”. This is particularly relevant for restaurants, which often only accept cash for lunch, where low-profit margin meals are served. The underlying message in this is that retailers in Japan recognise the importance of cash: it is safe, secure, and free of fees to merchants. Cash has an ongoing relevance which regardless of new technologies will be useful to consumers and businesses alike.

The Next Generation ATM project continues to roll out at an increasing pace. Last month Klear Technologies Inc has become the first company in the world to attain official Next-Gen ATM certification.  This marks another key milestone in the journey to futureproofing the ATM Industry.
