Experience Classic American Autumn Activities  

Hayride, corn maze, cow feeding, pumpkin carving, bonfire, s'mores, farmers market and more. Join the bus trip to Butterfield Farms (10 minutes from campus) on Saturday, October 22 from 2:30 to 5:00pm to take part in these U.S. cultural classics. 

This is a family-friendly event; children of international students and scholars can participate for free. Cost for the trip to Butterfield Farm is $8 and includes: transportation, bonfire, s'more ingredients, hayride, cow feeding and pumpkin carving equipment. (Please note: Those interested in carving a pumpkin will need to purchase a pumpkin, $5-$10, on their own. There is also a $5 corn maze for anyone who is interested.) All activities are optional. 

Asian Culture Festival | 5:00 - 8:00 pm

Asian American Association will be hosting a celebration of the cultures of multiple Asian countries through activities, performances, food and interactive booths in Uptown Park.

Thinking about applying to graduate school in the U.S?

Come learn from Miami Admissions staff about the process and best practices for applying to U.S. graduate schools. ISSS staff will also share how to transfer your SEVIS record or update your I-20 for graduate studies. 

This info session will be offered via Zoom on October 19 from 1:00-2:00 pm. 

Considering an internship as an international student? 

ISSS staff will present info about Curricular Practical Training (CPT): what is CPT, how and when to apply for CPT, and other considerations fo off-campus work authorization during your studies. 

This info session will be offered via Zoom on October 25 from 1:30-2:30 pm. 

Please register for this session in advance and bring questions you have about CPT!

Check Your Academic Progress and Maintain Full-Time Enrollment

Mid-term grades should now be viewable in BannerWeb. If midterm grades are not available in BannerWeb for a particular course, check Canvas to review your grades. If you have questions or concerns about your academic progress, reach out to your professor and take advantage of academic support resources like the Rinella Learning Center or English Language Learner Writing Center.

If you are struggling in your courses and thinking about making changes to your schedule, please keep the following things in mind:

• You must remain enrolled full-time in order to maintain your legal status (12 credits for undergrads; 9 credits for graduate students)
  • Undergraduate Students
    •    F-1: Must take at least 9 of 12 credits in-person.
    •    J-1: Must take all 12 credits in-person.
  • Graduate Students
    •    F-1: Must take at least 6 of 9 credits in-person.
    •    J-1: Must take all 9 credits in-person.

• Do not drop any courses that will impact your full-time enrollment without talking to ISSS first

• The final set of late-start sprint courses begin on begin October 19. There is limited course availability for late 6 week sprint options. If you are considering making adjustments to your schedule and adding a late 6 week sprint course, take action now.  
  • If you have a registration hold, it will prevent you from adjusting your course schedule.
• The deadline to withdraw from a full-semester course is October 24. ISSS encourages you to make decisions now rather than wait until the withdrawal deadline.

Global Friendship Thanksgiving Dinner Is Back!

Returning after a two year hiatus, the Global Friendship Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on the evening of Thursday, November 17. This event is an opportunity for international students and scholars to experience a traditional American holiday and engage in meaningful interaction and friendship with community members and Miami faculty and staff. 

Classic Thanksgiving food will be served along with other fun and activities. Cost to attend: $7 per person for 1-2 ticket(s); $6 per person for 3 or more tickets; children under 10 years old are free. 

• Share a story from your culture! International students are invited to read an age-appropriate story at at Mini University, the childcare center located on Western Campus on Monday, November 14 from 10-11am. If you are interested in reading a story from your home country to the kids, reach out to Karla at guinigkm@MiamiOH.edu. 
• Howe Writing Center Writing Contest: Write a a poem, essay or short story about autumn without words: night/evening/dusk, pumpkin, leaf, orange, autumn, fall, harvest, crisp, spice, chill, death or dying.
