Cash remains an indispensable part of the payment system.
Cash remains an indispensable part of the payment system.
Dear Amber,
Earlier this month we saw the Coles supermarket chain across the country close because of failure in their EFTPOS system. This resulted in a full day of lost trade and inconvenience for many. This fiasco draws attention to the perils of an over-reliance on digital payments - an unreliable, insecure, unstable payment system.
In response to unscientific and disproportionate cash bans introduced by Governments and businesses at the start of the pandemic, ATMIA produced a position paper calling for the Australian Government to introduce a mandate for cash transactions under $10,000. The response to this Position Paper has been very encouraging with many groups outside the industry expressing support for the role of cash in the Australian payment system.
Recently, the cashwelcome.org industry group began a petition which is being circulated to the general public calling for the cash mandate advocated for in ATMIAs Position Paper. This is an important step forward, with already over 1000 signatures, I strongly encourage all industry stakeholders to take some time out and click here to sign this petition.
The RBAs Next Generation Banknote program has reached a milestone: with the final banknote of this program, the $100 note, to be released into general circulation on 29th October. This new $100 banknote is equipped with new security features as with all the new next-generation banknotes it includes a "tactile" feature to help the vision-impaired community to distinguish between different denominations of banknotes. A reminder the Asia Pacific virtual conference is fast approaching, make the most of the recovery and hear from industry stakeholders what will be required to meet the opportunities and challenges with the future of this industry. This three-day virtual event will be held on 8th-10th December, feel free to contact Reena Kaur for sponsorship packages or Dana Benson for speaking slots.
There are encouraging signs as the ATM industry continues to expand and recover: recent cash withdrawal data indicates that the decline in withdrawals has ended and withdrawals have begun to increase again. Stay safe and stay strong and let's continue to work together to ensure the future of this industry in the years to come.

Thanks
