Great News for SDG Futures Fellowship!Application Deadline: September 18, 2022

SDG Futures fellowship, a program created by RCE Greater Atlanta Summer 2022 Interns, is in full swing. We’re happy to announce that SDG Futures Fellowship has been awarded the AGREC grant of $10,000 and will receive additional monetary support from the Georgia Tech Center for International Business Education and Research center in Scheller.
Set to run from Fall 2022 to Spring 2023, the SDG Futures Fellowship focuses on:
- Youth Leadership and Professional Development
- Education on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
SDG Futures Fellowship will be co-led by Georgia Tech and KSU with involvement from RCE GA community partners. There will be in-person and virtual events and workshops, with some open to the public (so stay tuned for those). Students from all of the RCE-affiliated Higher Education Institutions are encouraged to apply. Young professionals interested in transitioning to sustainability careers may participate through SGF Fellowship as well.
The program will officially start in early October and applications are open. Be sure to apply if you’re interested in learning more about United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, youth leadership, and professional development.

New Masters Program at Georgia Tech: Global Development M.S.

The M.S. in Global Development is a one-year (12-month), 33-hour program designed to prepare professionals for sustainable development work in governments, private development firms, and NGOs in developing countries, primarily in Africa, Asia-Pacific, the Caribbean, and Latin America. The program responds to the substantial challenges of rapid urbanization, climate change, and growing inequality in cities of developing regions and draws on concepts and skills from economics, politics, city and regional planning, and international affairs. Students will gain multidisciplinary knowledge and training needed to help address challenges in anything from infrastructure provision to poverty reductions. The program is hosted jointly between Georgia Tech’s School of City and Regional Planning, School of Economics, and Sam Nunn School of International Affairs.

In his new role as Chief Resilience Officer with Gaia Green Earth Tech, Djuan Coleon has shared a relevant and thoughtful article about Gaia's efforts in bridging the digital divide with "digital vibranium" (free private LTE broadband) for frontline communities. They have provided over 1200 families with free broadband services in St. Louis and look to expand in Georgia and across the country this fall with new deployments.

In partnership with UNESCO, the Global RCE Service Centre at UNU-IAS is now accepting submissions for the RCE Youth Biodiversity Art Challenge! The challenge is open to anyone aged 35 or younger worldwide. They are looking for your creative works of art that put a spotlight on the species, habitats, and ecosystems that we need to work to protect.

RCE GREATER ATLANTA MEMBERS ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND!
RCE Salisbury will host this Meeting with the support of the United Nations University - Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS). The Americas RCE Meeting will provide a platform to discuss, debate, and launch activities that reinforce education's fundamental role in achieving a sustainable future in the region. The Meeting also aims to take stock of regional initiatives, including the role of ESD in implementing sustainable development in the Americas. The Meeting will be in-person but also live-streamed online.

COP 27 is being held in Egypt this year and I have been a part of a delegation supporting a Pre-COP 27 Africa Summit, focused on exhibiting the amazing work being done on the continent to combat climate change. It’s the first conference of its kind to lead into COP that will highlight the continent, some of the most impacted people, and the diaspora.
The summit will take place virtually September 19-23, 2022 and registration should be available next week. We are still looking for sponsors for this event, so if you know of organizations that would be interested in sponsorships, please let me know. Sponsorship goes towards the event set up and in supporting the HBCU Green Fund fellows in hands-on sustainability work in Africa next spring. Sponsorship starts at $5k.

This project is a series of virtual conversations starting August 2022 on the topic of climate justice and the impacts of natural disasters in Atlanta. This initiative aims to place the community voice at the center of the climate change conversation and participants will be compensated $30/hour for their time.

The Ray

The Ray is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, and a public living laboratory for transportation innovation on Georgia's I-85. They demonstrate cutting-edge technologies that will lead to a zero carbon, zero waste, and zero death highway.
The Ray is pursuing partnership opportunities with transportation agencies across the US to scale the innovative technologies and methodologies successfully demonstrated on The Ray. To support this scaling effort, The Ray is developing GIS-based resources and tools to provide specific and actionable data that our partner organizations can use to build sustainable transportation projects.
The intern will work directly with the GIS Specialist and will:
Support the development and management of GIS maps and applications
Perform data capture and analysis
Efficiently manage geospatial databases and aerial photography
Accurately maintain GIS database information by interpreting data from a variety of sources and creating, verifying, and updating information in the GIS database through the use of GIS software and tools
Acquire, download, correct, integrate, and analyze data provided by The Ray's partners into existing GIS datasets
Attend meetings as requested by The Ray staff.
Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree in a related field
Strong written and oral communications skills
Analytic skills and experience
Proficient in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online web maps and apps
Detail-oriented and experienced in quantitative data analysis
Self-motivated, flexible team player with a positive attitude
Commitment and passion for the environment

If you would like additional assistance promoting your event through RCE channels, please contact us. The more time we have, the better we will be able to help get the word out. Please get us the information one month in advance of the event date, if possible.
The RCE newsletter is sent out on the 1st Thursday of every month. Content is sourced from the Google Group, but RCE Members can also send projects, events, and stories to include! Please email rcegreateratlanta@gmail.com by the end of the previous month to be included in the following month's newsletter.
