How Georgia is doing its part to fight climate change, and how you can aid the effort

Dr Kim Cobb is a Drawdown Georgia researcher, a member of the Georgia Climate Project Leadership Team, and Director of the Global Change Program at Georgia Tech. In her recent interview with 11Alive News she discusses how you can take action on climate change.
"People think about climate change as something that's far off in space and far off in time, impacting somebody else somewhere. Maybe it's impacting me in my lifetime, maybe my grandkids, but it's really not considered a here and now issue," said Georgia Tech professor Dr. Kim Cobb. "And it really is a here and now issue for Georgia."

Charlotte King Reflects on Her Experience as a Sustainability Judge at The Triton Innovation Challenge

RCE Greater Atlanta Member Charlotte King was a judge at the Triton Innovation Challenge, a business competition of the most promising, environmentally focused technologies generated by the finest minds at UC San Diego. She had the opportunity to ask students questions that were a direct extension of the RCE focus on the SDGs and on environmental justice.
"My perspective and questions for contestants were combined with those of judges who came from a venture capital background. We were judging innovative products at the intersection of public policy, innovation, sustainability, science, data, equity, and the United Nations SDGs. The ideas shared by contestants were gamechanger innovations for escalating meaningful climate solutions. I asked, 'How does this concept's viability translate from a Western lens to places where Indigenous populations are experiencing greater harm?' The winning concept dealt with a bio replacement for plastics and already has early adopters. Another breakthrough was an extraordinary stormwater approach that addressed the impacts of pollution, contaminants, and high cost. Consider this, driving climate change innovation that is relevant to your neighbors next door, to a climate investor, and that addresses global goals is a tall order - but we're long past the easy remedies. Now water sources are becoming limited, weather is an existential threat, and the planet is fighting back with pandemic viruses. We need the big guns, we have to make the tough choices, and we hope to find the 'all of the above' silver bullet. "

Atlanta Studies Symposium
May 6th, 8:00am-6:00pm (In Person at Georgia State University, College of Law)

The pandemic has kept us at home, shifting our spatial imaginaries and how we experience the city. It has also shined a new light on the roles of essential workers and those not privileged enough to work from home. And as we come out of lockdown, there’s an opportunity to see the city (past, present, future) with new eyes. This could be a frame for thinking about novel methodologies to study Atlanta, a forum for exploring the diverse disciplinary perspectives that the Atlanta Studies Symposium brings together, as well as a loose umbrella that could bring together a variety of empirical studies, such as seeing from the perspective of marginalized communities/lost histories/stories from the periphery rather than the center.

Networking and Planning Session for RCE HELC's New Community of Practice
May 12th, 11:30am-12:30pm (Virtual)

We are excited to invite you to the launch of a new community of practice (CoP) about teaching with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in higher ed. This is a community of educators from multiple institutions in the greater Atlanta area and beyond--UGA, Georgia Tech, and KSU are co-organizers, and instructors in southern and coastal Georgia expressed interest at a recent USG conference. Many of us are working on this topic in our own institutions and this CoP will help us expand our work by sharing our resources, providing networking opportunities, and advancing peer learning.
We will host a networking and planning session on Thursday, May 12 from 11:30am-12:30pm via Zoom. We will spend the first part of our meeting networking, giving you the chance to connect with other college educators engaging their students with the UN SDGs in their courses. We’ll then spend the second half of the meeting planning activities for the CoP in the coming academic year. Please contact Rebecca Watts Hull with questions (rwattshull@gatech.edu).
