A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Ordway Families,
This week the Bainbridge Island School District announced that the hybrid ‘in-person’ start has been delayed until January 2021. Specific information relating to this announcement can be found here. When looking at the District phasing plan and county health data, it is challenging to understand the delay and as Dr. Bang Knudsen stated in his letter to families, factors beyond our control such as health statistics and unfilled staffing needs have us ‘pressing pause’ for now.

Learning will continue through the launch pad where students access Google and SeeSaw platforms. When visiting remote classes both last spring and this fall, I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to observe the changes made to online learning through the efforts of our teachers in the Continuous Learning 2.0 model. The staff and I know that students have diverse needs and online learning can be a challenge and we will continue to work with you on ways to support all students so that they grow and meet their potential. Strategies in addition to online platforms so far include student kits sent home, paper/pencil learning alternatives and modified assignments as needed. We will continue to work on more solutions for students and share them throughout the semester.

Meeting students where they are at and creating a plan for growth is important to us.  With Parent Teacher conferences being held this week, we look forward to discussing ways we can continue to partner with you and support your child’s academic and social emotional growth. Here are a few tips to prepare for conferences:

Please share about your child’s strengths, needs, attitude towards school, and learning style. The more you can share about your child’s remote learning experience, the more we can determine how to best support your child.

Feel free to ask questions about schedules, technology and expectations.

Let us know what communication format works best for you. This is a new learning environment and we are working on building relationships with each other. If you have a preference on how to continue two-way communication between school and home please share that with us.

Covid fatigue, cabin fever, lost traditions, and missing those we care about at this time of year has Fall bringing us not only cloudy weather, but difficulty seeing a silver lining. The staff and I want you to know that we see you, we hear you, and we are here for you. We have scheduled some amazing events for November to go with this month’s trait of gratitude. More information is to come in our next newsletter, but we are looking forward to a virtual visit with celebrity author Suzanne Selfors, Treats for Troops, and Ordway’s annual Helpline Food Drive this month. At Ordway, we do believe that we can do a lot with what we have, where we are and we look forward to creating our own silver lining as we focus on giving and gratitude in the month of November.

Kind Regards,
Melinda Reynvaan

PTO NEWS

Ordway Otter Search & Find

Now through October 31st
For the two weeks leading up to Halloween, we have a fun search-and-find activity planned. We've hidden six otters in Halloween costumes around the island.
If you spot an otter while you and your children are outside enjoying the beautiful Bainbridge Island autumn, snap a pic and send it to ordway.president@bainbridgeptos.org
or post it with the hashtag #OrdwayHalloween
We will slowly release clues about the whereabouts of each otter on our Facebook and Instagram accounts, and on the Ordway PTO website.
Any time you use the hashtag #OrdwayHalloween or send us a pic via email, your family will be entered to win one of three prizes from local island businesses.

Share Halloween and Fall Photos

Now through November 6th
If you'd like to participate, share a photo of your families, child(ren)—even pets—in costume or enjoying the season for a virtual Parade of Costumes and Fall Fun which we will feature on our PTO website. Please email photos to PTO Secretary Tanith de Boer before Nov. 6th:
