Hi Ole Miss parents and families,
We hope you are staying safe and warm wherever you are! Extended frigid temperatures and snow in Oxford has made for an interesting week at the university. We will admit to braving the elements to get in a sled ride or two, but please know that university staff across campus — from Housing to Dining Services to Facilities Management — have all been working hard to make sure students have what they need to get through the deep freeze.
With the spring semester underway, we wanted to share some student success resources with you. No matter the circumstances, there is always someone at Ole Miss who can help or point you in the direction of the help for your student. We’ll share additional resources as the semester goes on, but if you need any assistance in the meantime, please reach out to Merrill Magruder at merrill@olemiss.edu.

Student success throughout the semester

For help with specific classes, study tips or time management, students can reach out to the Center for Student Success and First-Year Success at cssfye@olemiss.edu. CSSFYE offers resources such as academic coaching, success skills classes and advising information. Especially during this accelerated spring semester, the earlier students can reach out, the better!
Student Success Workshops from CSSFYE are Tuesdays at 2 p.m. to help students with common issues like strategies for time management, test prep and note-taking. Each virtual workshop is designed to help students reflect on how they learn, as well as practice alternative study techniques for more effective and efficient learning. For more info and a schedule of workshops, visit this page.
University Writing Centers are holding live, online Writing Center Workshops focused on different elements of writing. Each virtual session includes downloadable resources and the opportunity to work in small groups or individually with writing consultants. Visit the Writing Center for the full schedule of workshops.
The J.D. Williams Library has resources, tutorials and one-on-one consultations for how to use and access library materials and conduct research. Students can ask a librarian, contact their library liaison, look at subject-specific research guides and look through online learning resources for library tutorials, Mississippi Wi-Fi locations and more support for online and remote users.

Student health and safety

Encourage your student to be responsible. In addition to the city’s planned lane for rideshare services and designated drivers behind Boure on the Square, the Oxford-University Transit runs a Safe Ride shuttle every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7 p.m.-midnight this semester. It picks up downtown in front of the Federal Building (911 Jackson Avenue East) and loops around campus. See the route here.
We thought it would be helpful to let you know that whenever changes are made to the campus schedule — like this week with the winter weather — those changes will be posted at emergency.olemiss.edu. Messages are also shared with students via RebAlert, email, and Twitter (@RebAlert).
In addition to COVID-19 testing, University Health Services also offers pharmacy services, women’s health services, HIV testing, lab services and flu and strep tests. Students can learn more or make an appointment at healthcenter.olemiss.edu.
And speaking of the Health Center, we think you might enjoy reading the “Positive Vaccine Side Effects: Hugging and Herd Immunity” blog by Dr. Jean Gispen, staff physician with Employee Health. Dr. Gispen is a long-time and well-beloved member of the Ole Miss family who is known for her sense of humor and straight-talking perspective.
Because of the extended winter weather, we’ve shifted our free asymptomatic testing to walk-in testing at the University-Oxford Depot Monday-Tuesday, 1-5 p.m. and Wednesday, 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Even though we’ve changed locations, it is still very flexible with schedules — once someone makes an appointment, they can then come in any day or time during testing hours that week. Before the test, students should create a Sonic MyAccess account, make an appointment by either texting “2020” to 833-991-3009 or by clicking here, fill out the intake form and save their confirmation number. Results will come through the Sonic MyAccess account within 24 hours. For any questions about how to see results, visit this webpage or call 877-277-6642.

Chancellor Boyce's "Spring 2021 Events and Activities" message to students this week outlines the next steps for expanding engagement opportunities safely for the remainder of the semester.
We now have more than 380 registered events scheduled for the spring semester, and we expect to add many more before the term ends. If your student wants to know more about getting plugged into campus, encourage them to participate in Engagement Week, which will be Mar. 1-4 on campus. Also, be sure to check out a calendar of student events in The Forum.

The Visit Oxford events calendar is one way to keep in touch about the goings-on around town. And the Oxford Film Festival has added a new element of fun with weekly Drive-In Movies!
