Burns Hargis was named the 18th President of Oklahoma State University and the OSU System in December 2007 and took office March 10, 2008.

Hargis oversees one of the nation’s most comprehensive land-grant university systems with more than 35,000 students, 7,000 employees, and campuses located in Stillwater, Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Okmulgee.

As president, Hargis has enthusiastically united the broad OSU community of students, employees, alumni and donors behind his bold vision of a modern land-grant university that cuts across disciplines to better prepare students for success. The results have been historic.

He has guided OSU to record enrollment and record fundraising, with pledges and cash surpassing the $1 billion Branding Success campaign goal nearly two years ahead of schedule. In total, OSU has raised more than $2 billion in private support and added more than 81,000 new donors during Hargis’ time as president. OSU’s giving has focused on student scholarships, faculty, facilities and other vital resources and programs

REFLECTIONS

When Money Had Value

 by Leonard Sullivan
I grew up in the 1930's and 40's, when money had value.  When I went to the grocery store, feed store, or filling station with my parents, I never asked for a dime or a nickel for a treat.  I might ask for a penny which would buy two pieces of bubble gum, candy, jaw breakers, suckers, etc.  And there where the machines containing peanuts, red hots, jelly beans, etc. (Those glass containers on a stand which for a penny you twisted the handle and a handle and a handful of goodies fell out.) As I got older I might ask for a nickel to buy a cold soda or a candy bar (which was the size of a $1.50 candy bar today).

As we became old enough (10 or 12), we picked blackberries, mowed lawns, and did odd jobs to earn a dollar. We would spend part of the dollar, but mother kept most of the money we earned to purchase our school clothes when school started in the fall.  School clothes usually consisted of a couple pair of jeans, bib overalls, shirts, and a new pair of shoes.  By the start of school our old shoes were outgrown and worn out.

Thank You From Jr. Rotarian Caroline Hall

Dear Club 29 Rotarians,
What an honor it was to serve as a Junior Rotarian this year.  Being able to serve as the Acting Chair of the Day at the recent meeting was definitely one of the highlights of my senior year!
I can't thank each of you enough for the wonderful scholarship.  It will be most helpful in allowing me to pursue my studies at SMU this fall. Thank you for making an impact in my education.
All the best to each of you,
Caroline Hall
