BISD
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Sakai Families,

I hope you had a wonderful weekend. The first day of school is only a week and a half away! Woo hoo! We are SO EXCITED to welcome your students to this school year and begin community building and learning. Last week I shared with you the Sakai Family Handbook which has important information on school procedures, such as arrival and dismissal. I encourage you to please take a moment to read through this before the year starts to ensure a smooth transition back to school. Below you will find some additional information on class placement, Flex time, and an introduction to our “Family Dare”.

Class Placement
Skyward Family Access will be turned on this afternoon at 4 p.m. and you will be able to see the classroom placement for your child.

We consider this placement information final. Due to the many accommodations, we have taken into account for all students, and the parent/teacher information we gathered regarding a student's social/emotional and academic needs, there is little opportunity to make further adjustments to class assignments. If you have questions regarding your child's class placement please call Beth Hebert - Counselor,  Drew Crandall - Principal, or Bridget Lockett-Dean of Students.

Supply lists are available on our website.

Flex Time
At Sakai we have scheduled a 40-minute instructional block for each teaching team called “Flex”. The goal of Flex is to carve out daily time for teachers to flexibly and intentionally address the wide range of student learning needs beyond what they already do in their core instructional blocks. During this time students may be served by supporting services, such as our Title program, receive small group or individual instruction, work on enrichment or extension assignments, or even silently read. Because of the intention of this differentiated learning block, Flex will look different from student to student and will change for each student throughout the year. Students enrolled in band will meet for band instruction twice a week during their Flex time as well.

Family Dare
Our school is piloting a new social-emotional curriculum called CharacterStrong. An aspect of that curriculum is character “Dares” or challenges we will be giving our students. An example is, “give 5 genuine compliments to people throughout your day.” As we partner in cultivating compassion and belonging in our community, I also have some Dares for you all! Each Family Dare offers families the opportunity to engage in challenges designed to increase connection and conversation at home. Look for the first Family Dare next week.

We look forward to seeing you on Friday at the Ice Cream Social!

ICE CREAM SOCIAL
Please join us for our annual before school event where students get to familiarize themselves with the school, meet their teachers, bring their supplies and meet the PTO Board. Our wonderful PTO will be serving ice cream and selling Sakai shirts and sweatshirts.

WHAT: Ice Cream Social and Scavenger Hunt
WHEN: Friday, September 2nd, 10:30-11:30 am
WHERE: Sakai

Please print the scavenger hunt map and bring it with you.  Follow the numbers to get to know the school.
STUDENT CHROMEBOOKS
We are excited to announce that all Sakai students will have take-home Chromebooks this year.
Incoming 5th graders will receive new Chromebooks on the first day of school.  This Chromebook will be theirs until they enter 9th grade.  Please discuss with your students proper care for their Chromebook.  Students are responsible for their Chromebooks 24/7 and should bring them to school, fully charged, everyday and take them home every afternoon.  They should always be transported using the assigned bag.  I encourage everyone to review the BISD Take Home Device Information.

I strongly encourage everyone to purchase insurance to cover accidental damage to their Chromebook.  Information on insurance and the enrollment form are available at Chromebook Insurance Program. The annual fee easily pays for itself. If you are in need of a scholarship to cover the cost, please contact the counselor, Ms. Hebert.

We are so excited to start a new school year and have students together again.

This must be completed in order to see your student's class placement in Family Access.
STUDENT MEALS
Families who think they may qualify for free and reduced price meals should complete an application for the new school year.
Electronic applications and information can be found on the district Food & Nutrition Services page.
FAMILY HANDBOOK
Hot off the press!

Here is the 2022-23 BISD Family Handbook with key information about BISD.  This is a handy guide and a good place to start when you have questions involving the district's policies and practices.
