Moien everybody! Welcome back to the newest edition of the MUDEC newsletter. It’s hard to believe that we have already finished up our study tours and spring break! I can’t help but think about how we have been studying abroad in Luxembourg for almost two months now. In this newsletter, I will be writing about some specific destinations that MUDEC students fell in love with while visiting.
When traveling abroad, it's important to understand just how different every culture truly is. In school we try to learn this fact, but no words or advice can prepare you for its reality. The truth is that the classroom cannot educate you on the unique, niche, and unforgettable aspects of each country that create such a long lasting impression.

One of the most important benefits of studying abroad through MUDEC in Luxembourg is how accessible the rest of Europe is. Our tiny little home in the center of the continent helps keep weekend trips affordable and straightforward. During the week at the Château, students spend hours planning out trips with friends. For as much as this experience is an academic gain, it also is about experiencing new cultures. By utilizing travel, students are able to break outside of their comfort zone.

Throughout the past week I picked the brains of my fellow classmates and asked what their favorite weekend trips had been thus far. Eventually, I landed on two that seem to be the favorite destinations of the semester.

Before traveling to Europe for the first time, I didn't see Portugal as a country that was very high on my visit list. However, I truthfully couldn't have been more wrong. Because it is only a short three-hour flight away, Portugal is very easy for students to travel to. Whether it be Lisbon or Porto, the country has unbelievable cities to explore.
In Lisbon you can explore beaches, hike around the city, climb the Cristo Rei, and that's only a few trademark features the city offers. There's a reason why this capital city has become a fan favorite here at MUDEC.
Here is what Liam Fronk had to say about his experience in Lisbon:

Lisbon was extremely beautiful and very different from anywhere I’ve traveled before. It’s located on the coast of Portugal, which makes for great seafood and an amazing atmosphere. The houses were colorful to match the coastal feel, and the architecture of the churches and larger buildings was very impressive as well. The culture was so welcoming and everybody seemed happy to have a conversation. I really enjoyed watching the sunset from the rooftop of my lodging, but my favorite place I went had to have been the Cristo Rei. It was an amazing monument and had a stunning view of the city. I really enjoyed my experience in Lisbon and can’t wait to go back to Portugal sometime soon!”

When researching locations to visit at the beginning of the year, there was one city that ended up in every conversation, and that was Amsterdam. Amsterdam is one of the premiere cities of Europe. Every time I have talked to family and friends from back home they ask me the same question: "Have you visited Amsterdam yet?" With its long and storied history, invigorating landscape, and a special energy that captivates all of its visitors, the capital of the Netherlands is a must see.
This is what Nic Conway had to say about his trip to Amsterdam:

“When walking through the "photoesque" streets of Amsterdam it was clear to see how historical most of the buildings were. The architecture was incredibly unique and the canal system that ran through the city gave it a very distinctive feel. It was fascinating to see just how many bikes were around the city and how prevalent biking culture is in the Netherlands. My favorite experience in Amsterdam was when my friends and I rode pedal boats through the canals. It was very cool to see the city in different elements.”

Having the opportunity to study abroad and travel the world is one that we don’t take lightly. It doesn't matter whether students had never left the country before, or grew up traveling often with their family. Everyone is in the same boat! I can't wait for the second half of the semester, and to see what other beautiful destinations we end up visiting.
