That's Not Going To Work! We Need to..

Kevin (14 years old living in the Bronx) and Xavi (13 years old living in the Bronx) are working on an application using APIs to predict who would win an NBA or Major League Baseball game. It's not working and they are trying to fix it. Xavi is sharing what he thinks should work when Kevin blurts out "That's not going to work!!!". He says this more than once as nobody was listening to each other. After a brief intervention, everyone says what they think before they try out different code. Eventually, they solve the problem. It will be launched on our website for everyone to see!
I don't know about you but I think this is really great to see students problem-solving. Thirteen and fourteen olds arguing about what JavaScript solution they need to employ to make their API-based application work. These students are not one-offs. Code for Life has 70 students from Harlem and the Bronx who are being equipped to become the next creators and makers. They are so gifted! This summer we anticipate having 90 students taking our Web Basics (HTML, CSS, Git, GitHub), Software Development I & II (JavaScript), and Software Development III (Ruby & Ruby on Rails).
Our young people have just completed the most difficult school year I've ever seen. They are hungry to learn! To grow! They can code! We need help. So we invite you to invest in our young people by providing financial support for our program this summer. Through you, we can have more students learning to code and creating applications where they are problem solvers! Please join our tremendous partners; the Harlem Children's Zone, Bowery Mission, Young Life, PS 349, and JHS 123 this summer in our mission to equip the next generation of Creators & Makers!
This summer we will be having Web Basics, Javascript, and Ruby classes with 90 students in the Harlem, Soundview, and Mott Haven neighborhoods of our city every Monday through Thursday morning and afternoons.

                 Code For Life is Growing

We are excited to report that Code for Life has expanded! Currently, we are partnered with Young Life Bronx Region in the Kingsbridge and Soundview neighborhoods of the Bronx at the International School for Language & Arts (in-school) and JHS 123(after-school) schools. Things have gone so well that another school in the Fordham Heights area is interested in our starting up in the fall. We are grateful to be partnering with Young Life who is also committed to equipping the next generation of creators & makers.
In the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx we are partnered with the Bowery Mission! This spring has had a great group of students taking Web Basics! They are working in teams on their websites now. We look forward to their presenting them in June. Our new instructor Dionel Panuncia has been doing a great job teaching them. Dionel recently moved here from Michigan where he attended the Potters House Christian School before he went on to a Bootcamp in Miami to learn to code. His family has roots in NYC where his mom grew up. He has been able to connect with his many cousins who are in NYC. We are happy to have him on the Code for Life team!
Finally, we are excited to announce a new partnership with the Harlem Children's Zone at the PS 349 school on Lenox avenue. We have a great group of students who are also working on their websites now. Stay tuned to when these websites will be presented. This group is taught by Wendel Wilson (Dell). These students will be among those who will be taking JavaScript this summer.

Celebrating Birthdays is Part of the Program Too

Throughout the pandemic, we brought birthday cakes to students! Delivering the cakes was very fun! In April we were able to do our first in-person birthday (in over a year) for Camilla in Mott Haven (Bowery Mission). What a great feeling there was throughout the room to do something as normal as sing happy birthday and eat some cake & ice cream! We look forward to celebrating some more birthdays this summer!
