News That Rocks

No April Fools, It's Online Rock School!

Welcome to School of Rock Remote!
Warm greetings from all of us at School of Rock Silver Spring!
Who could have predicted just a couple weeks ago where we are today?  One thing we know for sure is that music has a special way of carrying us through difficult times and so we knew we had to figure out a way to keep things rocking and rolling here at School of Rock.  We want to thank our AMAZING School of Rock Community for flexing with us, and especially their patience as we pivoted to a new platform in uncharted territory and how they have waded through tech and the uncharted waters of remote lessons.  We are proud of our students who are upping their game by practicing (woot!) and engaging and lifting our hearts and spirits.  It’s so great to see your faces! We are extremely grateful to our parents who are incredibly supportive for sticking with us through this time.  We sincerely thank you all and hope that you and your families are healthy and safe.
Much love,
Laura, Neel, Liz, Brooks, Jaime, Sean, Matt, Chris, Jeff, P’Nut, Kim, Henry, and Tempest
P.S.  From Laura....I have to give a huge shout out to my amazing Silver Spring staff who have truly been working round the clock to launch this new approach.  What an inspring bunch of people!

School of Rock Remote in Control!

March definitely went out like a lion! But thanks to your patience and perseverance, and the incredible hard work and dedication of our teachers and staff, we had a great first week rolling out the School of Rock Remote lessons. It has been great to reconnect with our students and get back to the music!
"Wait, I am a prospective new student, what is School of Rock Remote?"
It is our online, one-on-one music education program allows students to take music lessons remotely. School of Rock Remote furthers your child’s musical journey in a way that prioritizes well-being through social distancing. Weekly one-on-one online instruction is conducted by our expert School of Rock instructors in a safe virtual lesson room. Students receive their training using our proprietary education program, The School of Rock Method™, which couples virtual lessons with our proprietary Method App™, SongFirst Approach™ and Method Books™.

Student Spotlight of the Month - Meet Marie

Marie is one of our killer drum students. She is consistently generous, kind and hard working. Last season, she made her performance program debut rocking  out in Fleetwood Mac and we're so excited to have her back this season in Queen! Marie took some time to tell us about her School of Rock Remote experience so far:

What do you like most about the new School of Rock Remote platform?
I like the new School of Rock platform because there are a lot more activities. Like more awesome new online classes I heard about, which seem really fun.

What concepts are you currently working on in your online lessons?
In my lessons with Brooks, we are currently working on opening the high hat and accents on the high hat using the School of Rock drumming book.

What advice would you give to a new student about to start online lessons?
The advice I would give students new to online lessons is to just be prepared because in your lessons you get a lot more covered if you are really prepared.

What is your all time favorite School of Rock experience?
My favorite School of Rock experience was the Fleetwood Mac rehearsals because they were just really fun and all of the crew was so talented and awesome.

Name your three favorite bands:
Cold Play, Led Zeppelin, Green Day

Get Ready for Master Classes

Our incredible staff has been working tirelessly to create AMAZING masterclasses for our Performance Program and Rock 101 students! We will also be tapping into our amazing School of Rock network to bring you some great sessions from teachers we know in other areas.  The classes will be rolled out later this week and will be on a wide range of interesting topics, led by expert instructors. We will be putting out a calendar via email this week.  Stay tuned!

Guest Artist Series

We're super pumped to be able to offer our online LIVE Guest Artist Series where our students can join a live Q&A session with some of the best in the business.  Our first was with Jay Weinberg drummer extraordinaire with Slipknot who shared his musical journey, how he approaches songwriting and practicing and much more.  Active students, please check your email for the link to join these sessions!

Pro Tip of the Month

Jaime is our incredible advanced guitar and bass instructor, and is a seasoned professional, as you can tell from the photo. He has been with us for the past five years and continues to blow us away with his powerhouse musical knowledge. We're very luck to have this goofy musical genius hanging around!
What is your favorite thing about working with students on the new School of Rock Remote platform?
I like that it gives me a sense of normalcy in what are very strange times, and I hope that it gives the students and their families that same feeling. It's great to be able to focus on things I really care about--playing music and teaching--even during what we're going through right now.

What are three tips you would give your students to enhance their SoRR experience during this time?
Try to use the best audio equipment you have available, whether it's speakers, headphones, etc. Try to be in a quiet environment with the least amount of distractions...we're all dealing with siblings, roommates, pets...but do the best you can under the circumstances! Finally, have everything set up and ready to go, your instrument, any homework you prepared, etc. That way we can make the most of the time we have!

How would you approach working with a new student over Zoom?
Probably not that differently than I would in an in-person lesson. You have to get to know them as a person, their personality, their skill level, their musical goals, and the best way for them to learn. You can do all of that remotely, and be all the more prepared for when you get to work with that student in person!

What is one piece of wisdom you would give to all of your students?
With all the uncertainty in the world right now, take comfort in learning music, playing music, even just listening to music. It's a great way to deal with stress and anxiety. Also, to my younger students, go easy on your parents and tell them you love them!

The Shows Must Go On!

Yes, the timing is up in the air, but we are operating with the assumption that we will be able somehow, someway to finish this show season.  This past week, we launched our online performance program rehearsals and they have been going AMAZINGLY WELL! We hope everyone has enjoyed reconnecting with their bandmates and directors.
Let's hear what your show directors have to say about our new normal for rehearsals:
What a CRAZY Season it's been so far! These changes have certainly been a huge undertaking and we cannot thank you enough for keeping these shows alive.

We miss jamming with you all in the room. There's no denying that these circumstances are challenging, but we'll be working hard to keep the rock alive and elevate our shows. The most important thing is this: We don't have a show to come back to if we don't keep our material in tip top shape. Keep cracking away at your songs so that we can hit the ground running when we can finally get back in the studio!

Thank you all for your hard work this season -  We truly can't wait to see what you've been working on in your videos and to share with you all our plans for this unique and exciting season as we progress.
-Neel, Sean & Brooks

Summer Camp Update

For those who have signed up for summer camps, please hang tight!  We are not sure what the timelines are here but will work to add sessions and move sessions for all our campers when we have a better picture of what can be done.  We are even looking at some pretty cool online options. Thanks!
