Dear Amber,
This global pandemic has caused public concerns that the COVID 19 could be transmitted by cash. This is far from the truth, as there is no concrete scientific evidence of any person contracting COVID 19 after touching currency. The WHO has emphasised that cash is not a transmitter of COVID-19. We must not allow sensationalism to hurt the vulnerable and to ensure that cash remains part of the payment system.
In the current environment the use of cash should not be discriminated against, as the message is clear by maintaining effective social distancing, regular washing of hands and avoiding touching your face we can together prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Please refer the advice from the Australia Government: Royal Australian Mint
ATMIA will continue to advocate and defend the role of cash and to ensure that cash remains a resilient form of payment system globally. As part of our role during this pandemic, ATMIA has a designated COVID-19 portal to provide our members with the global industry information they need to help survive during these unprecedented times.
In order to prepare the industry for recovery after this pandemic peaks, ATMIA has a survey available to hear your concerns, recommendations, it's by industry stakeholders working together and sharing your views this will assist ATMIA with current and future issues as we continue to advocate the use of currency. To access the survey Click here
Whilst some countries remain in lockdown, we encourage industry stakeholders to take advantage of some of our online services available on the ATMIA website which includes:
Though these circumstances are uncertain and unpredictable, rest assured ATMIA will continue to work together with the Industry to ensure there is a strong future for cash and it will remain part of the payment system that is fair to all demographic groups globally.
Thanks,
