ATMIA plans USA security conference

ATMIA USA has announced plans to launch a new security conference in the U.S. market.  The event is expected to be scheduled for late June, 2020.  A number of venues are being considered – primarily in the Minneapolis and Chicago areas.

Preliminary plans call for a one-and-a-half day program focused on ATM physical, software, and cyber security.  Discussions are already underway with prospective speakers, attendees, and sponsors to finalize the event format and key topics for presentations.  We are eager to involve everyone impacted by ATM crime – deployers, providers, and law enforcement.

Exhibit and sponsorship opportunities will be available, but are still being defined.  Please contact Dana Benson directly for more information and continuing updates.

Battling crime and fraud tends to be a moving target.  Our objective is to provide a new vehicle to help the industry stay on top of emerging technologies and one step ahead of the bad guys.

Best regards to all,

Updated CiT Best Practices now available

ATMIA recently announced the publication of an updated Best Practices manual for Cash in Transit (CiT) in the U.S. market.  The original manual was released in 2011. This revised version incorporates a variety of updates reflecting new technologies and evolving standards for the industry.
Current events and statistics have been included in a new “Introduction” chapter to provide an overview of the crime landscape for CIT providers and as a reminder of the importance of due diligence and following industry best practices. In recent years there has been a significant increase in cash thefts associated with CIT carriers at their vaults, in transit and after the funds have been loaded into the ATM.
In an effort to foster a better and easier understanding of the manual, a “Key Terminology” chapter was added to the end. This new chapter includes detailed definitions for 62 key terms that are used throughout the manual, a few of which may not be familiar.
ATMIA members can download this and other industry Best Practices from the ATMIA website.

Monitoring the efforts to ban cashless retail

Michigan is the latest state to propose a ban on cashless retail establishments.  SB 310 amends the Michigan Consumer Protection Act of 1976 to prohibit retailers from refusing to accept payment by legal tender for in-person transactions.
Within the next few days, ATMIA USA plans to post an interactive map on its home page that will allow both members and non-members to monitor the progress of bans on cashless retail at federal, state, and city levels.  Website visitors will be able to see where these measures are being proposed and what progress is being made.

IAD bank account closure survey report now available

ATMIA created the 2019 IAD Cash Settlement Account Closure Survey to evaluate the impact of sudden cash settlement account closures experienced by many IADs (Independent ATM Deployers).  It sought to determine how widespread this problem is, what circumstances surround a typical account closure, and how operators are dealing with it.  The survey was open to all independent ATM operators/owners/acquirers – both ATMIA members and non-members.
Survey results show that 12% of respondents have never had an account closure and the largest single segment (27%) have had only 1 closure.  At the other end of the spectrum, only 14% have experienced more than 5 account closures.  Fleet size does not appear to play any role in those numbers.  Although 42% of respondents operate 100 or fewer ATMs, they are about as likely to have a history of 3 or more closures as an operator with over 1,000 terminals.
Even one account closure for questionable reasons is too many and can be catastrophic.  But independent operators overall do seem to be handling their account closures reasonably well.  About 77% were given 60 days or less to terminate their bank relationship.  And a total of 96% were able to find a new bank relationship in less than 60 days.  Although that search can be intensely frustrating, nearly all are successful in the end.
The full survey report is available for download from the ATMIA U.S. Region home page.  Direct any press inquires or questions about the survey to ATMIA USA Executive Director David Tente.  Contact the ATMIA membership team for information about the benefits of ATMIA membership
