We've been busy hosting a variety of programming and events including Campus Life Night, Silent Disco, and Family Weekend, just to name a few. Lakers Making a Difference

An impactful Grand Valley tradition is back! Make A Difference Day returns on October 15. Lakers are invited to join the Office of Student Life - Civic Engagement and take a bus to off-campus locations to participate in community service opportunities and events. If your student is looking to help your community at a local level, let them know they can sign up for Make A Difference Day today! Remind them to register by Oct 10 to take part in this national event.

GV's BooOOoo-tiful Arboretum is Getting a Makeover this October

October 13-14, the Campus Activities Board is transforming our peaceful arboretum into the haunted trails of your nightmares! Students can get their friends together for the biggest Halloween event on campus where we invite visitors to carefully tread – or run in fear – through the dark forest.

It's Homecoming Time!

Homecoming is just around the corner! On October 22, enjoy events for Lakers of past, present, and future by attending reunions, tailgates, campus tours, and more. End the weekend strong with a football game against Northern Michigan University, where the Homecoming Royalty will be announced. There will be many events that Lakers can attend and participate in throughout the week of Oct 17-22 because this Homecoming is bound to be the best one yet!

Laker Food Co Updates

  • Fall Break is coming up October 23-25 and we'll have some modified hours of operation. Please remind your student to check gvsufood.com after October 14 for the most up-to-date hours.
  • Is your Laker looking for a campus job? Encourage them to apply to work for Laker Food Co.!
  • As always, students can check their Meal Plan balance online.
  • Vegan/Vegetarian and made without gluten options are available! Trouble finding them? Let your student know they can contact the Campus Dining Registered Dietitian for more information.
  • Remind your student to follow Laker Food Co. on Instagram to learn about October themed meals including, Fall Fest and Halloween, as well as food truck days and giveaways!

Academic Success Workshops

The Student Academic Success Center (SASC) is offering virtual academic success group workshops throughout the fall semester.
October topics:
  • Simple Study Strategies
  • Setting Boundaries
  • Understanding Procrastination & Creating Motivation
All interested students should visit the SASC website to RSVP and for a list of all workshops. If students prefer to discuss these topics one-on-one with a success coach, they can make an appointment on the Success Coaching website.

This is an excellent opportunity for first-year students to kick off their job or internship search by networking with employers. 2022 On-Campus Flu Vaccine Clinics

With flu season approaching, it’s important to recognize the benefits that the flu shot has for our health, including reducing the risks of flu-related illnesses or hospitalizations. Please encourage your students to help protect our campus by scheduling their flu shot appointment today. Monkeypox (MPV) Vaccine Clinic - October 7

What is MPV? MPV is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. The virus that causes MPV is part of the same family of viruses as variola virus, the virus that causes smallpox. MPV symptoms are similar to smallpox symptoms, but milder, and monkeypox is rarely fatal.
GVSU will be hosting an MPV vaccine clinic on October 7 from noon - 5 p.m. on the Allendale campus — Kirkhof Center, room 1247. Students can schedule an appointment for the MPV vaccine.

Lakers Pick Up the Slack with RecWell's Outdoor Adventures
RecWell’s new Outdoor Adventures (OA) Meetups are a weekly social gathering to connect outdoorsy students through local exploration and informal activities. For the next few weeks, the group will be exploring slacklining! Students can have some fun, get their heart pumping, and test their balance with drop-in slacklining near the Cook Carillon Tower on Wednesdays, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Updates will be posted in the Outdoor Adventure Collective Facebook group. RA applications for 2022-2023 are now open and are due by 11:59 p.m. on December 20, 2022. Learn more about what an RA role entails and how to apply when you click the button below!

Financial Aid

The FAFSA for the 2023-2024 academic year is now open.  We encourage using the IRS data retrieval tool to pull 2021 tax information, to make the process even easier.  

Students are encouraged to browse scholarship opportunities on our online scholarship database, myScholarships. Students can begin to submit applications for the 2023-2024 academic year on November 1, 2022 by visiting www.gvsu.edu/myscholarships. Students with questions should contact the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships by e-mailing scholarships@gvsu.edu.

Set aside time with your student to file the FAFSA and explore myScholarships in order to maximize financial aid for the next academic year.
