BISD COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER

SUMMER EDITION

JULY 23, 2021

We hope you are enjoying summer and the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. You can expect back-to-school newsletters from the district and the schools in August. Until then, this newsletter contains a few key items that we wanted to bring to your attention.

And a special WELCOME to families new to BISD. We are so glad you joined our school district and we look forward to meeting you soon!
COVID-19 REQUIREMENTS & GUIDELINES FOR THE 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR

BISD is reviewing the Washington State Department of Health's K-12 COVID-19 Requirements for the 2021-22 School Year.

Soon after Washington DOH released its documents on July 6, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its updated guidance for schools.
An email from the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction stated: "Now that the new CDC guidance has been released, DOH will work to review the changes and put together a more comprehensive update to our state’s K–12 health and safety guidance."
BISD is waiting for an update from the state and we will let you know our mitigation plans as soon as they are finalized.
As a reminder, BISD students will return to full-time, in-person learning in the fall. (View school hours here. For those students whose situations require at-home learning, please contact Commodore Options Principal Trish Corsetti at tcorsetti@bisd303.org
PLEASE COMPLETE THE ABC PROCESS FOR 21-22
If you haven't done so already, please complete the Annual Back-to-school Check-in process (ABC) for every BISD student in your family. Access the ABCs by logging in to your Family Access account
IMPORTANT: The ABC 21-22 process must be completed before you can access your student's class placement or class schedule for next year. Class placements/schedules will be available in late August.
IMMUNIZATION INFORMATION
New immunization rules went into effect last year and are required as students return to in-person learning in September.

The changes include:
  • Tdap vaccine is required for entry into 7th grade
  • Immunization records turned in to schools are required to be medically verified
  • The definition of conditional status has been clarified
It is important to note that students may begin school if they have received all of the required immunizations they are due to receive and have submitted medically verified records on or before the first day of attendance. Students not in compliance with state immunization laws will not be allowed to attend.

Please see https://www.bisd303.org/Page/3439 for additional information on immunization requirements for all students. You can also find more information at the Washington State Department of Health website:
COVID-19 VACCINE INFORMATION
Children age 12 and older are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

It is important to note that Washington State Department of Health is encouraging the vaccine but is not currently requiring the COVID-19 vaccine for school attendance. Right now, only the Pfizer vaccine is approved for ages 12-17. Moderna and Johnson & Johnson are authorized for people 18 and older.

If you select to sign-up your 12+ student for a vaccine, please read the instructions carefully as each location seems to have its own release form and stipulations on vaccinating minors (such as having a parent present).

To locate a vaccine appointment, please visit:
https://vaccinelocator.doh.wa.gov/

This flyer from the Kitsap Public Health District contains helpful information including timelines for getting students fully vaccinated prior to the first day of school. The graph below shows vaccine rates for 12-18-year-olds in Kitsap. As of July 10, 2021, 86% of 12-18 year-olds living on Bainbridge Island have completed their COVID-19 vaccinations.
