Longwood Gardens

Longwood from Home

As the weather cools and hues of purple, gold, and red abound throughout the Gardens, we find ourselves eager for the crisp, invigorating feeling of a new season … and we’re excited to bring you this fresh new edition of Longwood from Home. This week, learn more about the return of our family-favorite Garden Railway and Pumpkin Playground, our just-announced return of artist Bruce Munro with his exhibit, Light, a spooky good time with our Halloween-themed Illuminated Fountain Performance, and more!

Fall is for Fun
Marvel at our fountain performances and live music in the Beer Garden on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings through October 30. Start your night in our Beer Garden as sounds of traditional Celtic tunes to Caribbean steel pan grooves set the tone for your fall evening. The October lineup includes Poor Man’s Gambit playing traditional Celtic on October 1 and 21; bluegrass with Marc Silver and The Stonethrowers on October 7 and 15, polka new and old with Polkadelphia October 16, 22, and 29; and much more!
Then, find a place to sit—or stand back in awe—as our Illuminated Fountain Performances offer a spectacle unlike any other. New this year, Las Vegas Legends (October 1 and 15) features the croons and tunes of quintessential Vegas residency artists; Hip Hop Mixtape (October 16) paying homage to the culture and expression of hip hop; and Here You Come Again (October 28) honoring cultural icon Dolly Parton. And don’t forget your returning favorites like our soul-stirring Queens of Soul (October 8), magical Pure Imagination (October 22), spook-tacular Halloween Magic (October 30), and more!

Hear from Associate Director of Display Design Jim Sutton, East Conservatory Manager Karl Gercens, and Senior Horticulturist Kat McCullough as they guide you through their own careers and how you can make one for yourself, too!

 Family Time in Our Gardens

No matter your age, our guests find both whimsy and skill in our Garden Railway (opening October 2) while the Pumpkin Playground (opening October 9) offers our youngest fun around every corner. At our Garden Railway, located near the Terrace Restaurant, celebrate the 20+ year tradition of our miniature model trains chugging their way along a picture-perfect landscape where a perfect blend of horticulture, engineering, and lighthearted fun awaits guests of all ages. The railway operates during regular Gardens hours, weather permitting.
In our Children’s Corner near the Idea Garden, children (and grown-ups!) can see and touch our many different colored pumpkins of all sizes and shapes. Amid our whimsical seasonal display of pumpkins, gourds, and corn husk towers, you'll find the perfect opportunity for a festive fall photo.

 A Brilliant Return

Immerse yourself in the dazzling artistry and infinite imagination of artist Bruce Munro as he makes his brilliant return to Longwood with Light, on view Thursday through Sunday evenings from June 30 through October 30, 2022. Tickets and Member reservations are available March 7, 2022.
Marking Munro’s return to Longwood 10 years after his debut in our Gardens, Light is an entirely new, breathtaking exhibition with eight installations spanning our indoor spaces and outdoor vistas. Look on in wonder as 18,000 illuminated bulbs adorn the Large and Small Lake landscape with Field of Light, see our Exhibition Hall transformed into a sparkling oasis of colorful reflections inspired by the waterlily, and experience so much more as Munro’s artwork beautifully interacts with our Gardens.
Stay tuned for more details about the exhibition, installation sneak peeks, insights from Munro, and more
