New Faces in Portraiture and Cleveland Treasures
Our friends at the Cleveland Photo Fest popped up in our space on Saturday, May 29 for "New Faces in Portraiture." This show featured 5 amazing artists: Gina Washington, Ross Bochnek, Eartha Goodwin, Steven Brown, and Asian Armour.
TOMORROW (June 11) at Doubting Thomas Gallery, you can catch some of these artists and many more at Cleveland Treasures. The centerpiece of the show is original design and costuming handmade by artist Jacci Hammer in her workspace at IngenuityLabs. A group of photographers and models spent a day working in the building photographing in its various distinctive industrial locations. Photographers whose work with appear are Anastasia Pantsios, Eartha Goodwin, Jackie Bertolotte, Laura D’Allesandro, Arron Bound, James Cooper and Asia Amour. Models include Armour, Gina Washington and musician Meganne Stepka, among others.
The opening night party will feature live performances by Michael McFarland and flow dancing by Fiercely Serene, and there’ll be action on the library lawn adjoining the gallery as well. No registration needed, just stop by!

Don't Miss Juneteenth Freedom Fest!
| |
As Juneteenth marks the ending of slavery on June 19, 1865, Cleveland’s Freedom Fest will celebrate and spotlight the rich historical presence of African American arts and culture in Cleveland. This begins with Karamu House, who after a year of virtual artistic presentations, looks to resume its in-person performances. An integral part of community culture, Karamu House is often a primer for the global stage and silver screen. It is a responsibility and privilege that the next generation of world-renowned Black artists continue to be groomed right here in Cleveland and to ensure that is the case, Freedom Fest proceeds will be donated to Karamu House.
Starting at 12:00 p.m. on June 19, the gates of Cleveland’s first Juneteenth Freedom Fest will open. The JACK Casino vendor village with more than 30 Black businesses and entrepreneurs will be on-hand, as well as community programming and education supported by The Sherwin-Williams Company, The Good Community Foundation and AKA Team Construction. The family-friendly celebration continues into the evening with a headline performance by GRAMMY Award winning Terri Lyne Carrington + Social Science with special guests Ms. Lisa Fischer and Maimouna “Mumu Fresh” Youssef; “Freedom on Juneteenth: Songs of Liberation,” a first-ever mainstage performance by Karamu House, the country’s oldest Black producing theatre; and a fireworks finale made possible by CL3 Alliance, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Cleveland Browns, and Cleveland Indians.
