IUP Values Me
Jorge is a proud, first-generation college student majoring in political science/pre-law, with minors in history, homeland security, and human development and family sciences. After he graduates in May, he will enter law school to pursue a career in family law. A student in the Cook Honors College, he recently gave a presentation at the National Collegiate Honors Conference in Dallas, Texas. This talk focused on centering our communities, developing a welcoming and inclusive community, and recruiting and retaining students of underrepresented backgrounds. He is the senior class representative on the Cook Honors College Executive Board and serves on the CHC Student Planning Collective. He is also president of the IUP Ambassadors and the National Society of Leadership and Success Honor Society. A Promising Scholar and Promising Scholar peer mentor, Jorge is the head resident assistant in Wallwork Hall and a member of the Rho Alpha Sigma RA Honor Society. He is also a member of the senior class Mortar Board organization and the Pre-law Society. Recent initiatives he led or assisted with are the Talons ’n Talents student showcase and an Office of Admissions high school visit for prospective students. We thank you, Jorge!
Staff Spotlight: Xi Wang
Xi is a professor in the Department of History and has been an IUP faculty member since 1994. His teaching focuses on African American history, 19th century US history, and the history of American constitutionalism. He is an accomplished author, and his work has been used as a model throughout China for graduate training in history and American studies. In 2014, he established a sister-school partnership between IUP and Hebei University in China. Xi has spoken at regional, national, and international conferences and meetings and serves on various university and departmental committees. He helped establish the Asian Studies and Pan-African Studies minors at IUP and has designed coursework to emphasize the evolution of race relations in the United States. He was selected as the Distinguished University Professor for 2022-23 for his “commitment to the teaching and mentoring of current and former students, abundant and outstanding service, and meaningful and extensive scholarship.” The projects he will pursue this year include creating a course on US immigration history and completing a book manuscript, tentatively titled “Make Every Freeman a Voter”: The American Story of Black Suffrage. We thank you, Xi!
A note about IUP Values Me: Each week, we highlight one student and one staff member to “shine a spotlight” on their leadership and involvement in campus programs and their great work assisting our campus community with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or civil rights awareness. If you have a suggestion for an IUP community member to feature in this section, please email social-equity@iup.edu.
