A Conversation About the Maps We Choose and the World We Want
The St. Luke’s Senior News team recently had the opportunity to chat with Ward Kaiser, who has received the Greater Good Award for his lifetime study of maps and their ability to tell us how the old method of map projection made Europe appear artificially large compared to Africa, resulting in promoting racial prejudice. Kaiser’s projection method preserved the relative size of countries, eliminating a source of racial discrimination.
| |
As a previous pastor himself, Ward explains that it’s not all about politics and faith and the values we hold. “It’s about human relations, social justice, peace, budgets, and environmental concerns because the maps we create and use influence all of these things. It’s about becoming aware of how we can shape and use maps, and how they, in turn, shape us.”
“Ultimately,” says Ward, it’s about becoming aware of the meaning behind the maps we use so we can reflect on and begin to create the kind of world we want.”
The Kaisers have settled at nearby Harbor Chase and will continue to be active at St. Luke's. His wife, Lorraine, had a career in Public Health and School Nursing. Additionally, they have donated a generous portion of their research materials, soon to be available in the library on the second floor of Building C.

Health Tips:
For lowering blood pressure
Stand with knees slightly bent, bottom tucked under. With palms facing down, inhale through your nose as your arms rise. Then exhale through your mouth as your arms lower. Repeat with your eyes closed and listen to your breath. Imagine your hands are painting a rainbow of Christmas colors on a wall in front of you.
– Al Aki

Consider this. . .
Christmas is forever, not for just one day, for loving, sharing, giving, are not to be put away like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf. The good you do for others is good you do yourself. – Norman W. Brooks
