Two Events with Jewel Kats
Find out how Jewel Kats made her disability her fortune
Award-winning children’s book author and comic-strip writer, Jewel Kats, will visit the Museum of disABILITY History for a two-day event on Friday, June 21 and Saturday, June 22!

On Friday, June 21, from 7 p.m.-9 p.m., the Museum of disABILITY History will host “An Evening with Ditzabled Princess Jewel Kats.” An adult friendly interview-style discussion with Jewel will be held where she will speak openly and frankly about her life as a “DitzAbled Princess.” Jewel is the author of the comic strip titled “DitzAbled Princess,” which is based on her own life as a diva who considers her disability her fortune! Jewel’s web comic has become a revolutionary online phenomenon and has over 250,000 followers. Jewel will also have copies of her comical diary available for purchase and signing. Refreshments will be provided.

A family-oriented event, the “Your Crowning Achievement” event will be held on Saturday, June 22, from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. There will be a book reading of Jewel’s fairy tale “Cinderella’s Magical Wheelchair.” Children will also have the opportunity to participate in a “make your own crown or tiara” craft activity and take a photo with Jewel. Books will be available for purchase with an autograph session. The event is geared towards children ages five an up. Popcorn and healthy snacks will be provided.

“Celebrating Differences” at Monkey See, Monkey Do… Children’s Bookstore
Need some fun and educational reading this summer? The Museum of disABILITY History, will host “Celebrating Differences” on Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. at Monkey See, Monkey Do… Children’s Bookstore, 9060 Main Street in Clarence. There will be book readings of Ivan the Invacar book series and “disABILITY Awareness” skits by Kids on the Block of WNY puppeteers. The Ivan the Invacar book series is written by James M. Boles, president of People Inc. The books are brightly illustrated to introduce children to disabilities and how to be more independent with adaptive equipment. The books also explore Ivan’s “superhero powers” and adventures! This event is free and geared towards children ages five an up. Books will be for sale. M&T Awards “kNOw bullying” Program Grant
“kNOw bullying!” Program Teaches Students How to be Bully Free!
The Museum of disABILITY History and People Inc. are pleased to announce that its “kNOw bullying” Program was recently awarded a $2,500 grant from M&T Bank. The funds will be used to help the program with its many initiatives. The goal of the project is to assist in the creation of positive school environments throughout Western New York that foster the expectation of acceptance and inclusion of all students. The program premiered in Western New York school districts in January of 2013. During the past four months, over 950 fourth graders have participated in the program in 10 school districts including: Buffalo, Clarence, Eden, Grand Island, Hamburg, Hinsdale, Ken-Ton, Niagara Falls, Perry and Williamsville. Museum of disABILITY History Named Winner of the OnCell Quest Contest
Ten cultural institutions across the United States have been named the winners of the OnCell Quest Contest. The winners will receive a free Quest Mobile Scavenger Hunt App for one year, beginning in July. The number one winner with the most votes is the Museum of disABILITY History! Thank you to all who voted! Quest creates an interactive mobile experience for visitors while using their own smartphones to guide themselves to “mystery” destinations. “Little Differences” Debuts
“Little Differences: The Portrayal of Children with disABILITIES Throughout History” is an exhibit that examines the depiction of children with disabling conditions in a variety of formats across the ages. Whether appearing in works of fine art, literature, media campaigns or in popular culture, these children were intended to rouse the audience to action. “Little Differences” is an opportunity to assess modern perceptions of disability through the prism of historical imagery.
 
“Little Differences” includes a six panel banner stand exhibit with “pre-poster children” from prior to 1900, kids and the Parents Movement, politicians and kids, kids on TV and in print media, a new generation of “post-poster children” and push-back from the disability rights community. A selection of artifacts from the Museum collection complements the banner stands. On display are tiny adaptive shoes, small AFO’s as well as postcards, match covers, and photographs. A trio of My American Girl® dolls is also part of the exhibit; one doll uses a wheelchair for mobility, one walks a service dog in training, and the third has a hearing aid and has lost her hair due to a medical condition.

Buffalo-Niagara 360’s “Happy Hour for a Cause” Benefits the Museum of disABILITY History
The Buffalo Niagara Partnership and its volunteer contingent, B_Team Buffalo, recently presented a Happy Hour for a Cause at the Delaware Park Marcy Casino to benefit the Museum of disABILITY History. Young professionals had a chance to meet with members of People Inc. senior management and staff, including Interim Museum Director David Mack-Hardiman who addressed the more than 50 in attendance. Several attendees became members to support the museum that is the only “bricks and mortar” of its kind nationally.
