Success Tip of the MonthBy Niccole Miller, Ph.D., senior director of strategic initiatives for student success
You know the situation - cram for finals, eat the Snickers, find the stress zit on your face, drink the coffee, stay up way too late, stress out, drink more coffee and feel utterly zonked. For some, after finals week, you may even be fighting off illness after your body exits the fight or flight mode. What if I told you that this didn't have to be you this go-round?
This month's tip is about taking time for self-care, which can still happen during finals week, even for those of you working full time, taking care of children and balancing "all the things." Here are some of my favorite self-care go-to's during finals week.
- Make a plan to make the most of your study sessions - and stick to it.
- Turn your phone on do not disturb during the times of the day that you need to focus.
- Read through your notes while walking on the treadmill or elliptical.
- Enjoy the chocolate and coffee (or whatever your favorites are), in moderation.
- Take a break from social media and anything else you don't have to do.
- End your study session 30 minutes earlier to get to bed a little earlier.
- Study somewhere (or with someone) that doesn't distract you and makes you happy.
Remember, your performance on finals is not indicative of who you are as a person. It's one test (okay, maybe five, but who's counting?). Give it your best effort and take time to prioritize your health because you only get one body, and you have one life to live. Live it well.
We're rooting for you!

Note: If you haven't already, be sure to send in electronic official transcripts from any and all accredited institutions you have attended to clear any transcript holds on your account that will keep you from enrolling in courses. Electronic official transcripts need to be directly sent from the previously attended school(s) to UCO at registrar@uco.edu. (Note: Even if transfer work is listed on your most recently attended institutions' transcript, you will still need to gather transcripts from all attended schools.)
