MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Sakai Families,

This week is Classified Employee Appreciation Week. At Sakai, we have such an amazing team of office staff, custodians, paraeducators, bus drivers, Covid monitors, and food service staff all working tirelessly for our kids. We are so grateful for all our classy staff!

Last Friday we held our Leaving Our Island Day Forum virtually for 6th-grade students. Students were able to hear from our panelists that were featured in the video created by Mr. Gurtler and curated by Clarence Moriwaki, President of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community. I was so impressed with our students and their sincere questions. We had hoped this year to couple this day with a field trip to the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial. While our Covid guidelines didn’t allow that this year, I encourage you all to visit as a family to learn and reflect together.

We are still getting questions each week related to our school district's policy regarding traveling during this time. While Bainbridge Island School District cannot mandate a period of quarantining after traveling, we do ask that you follow the Washington Department of Health and Center for Disease Control guidelines for traveling. Remember, we all need to work together to keep Sakai safe.

If you choose to or need to travel, please report your child’s absence at 206-780-6600.  Please complete the BISD Pre-Arranged Absence Request Form and email it to your child’s teacher if you know your child will be absent for more than 3 school days. Teachers will not be able to have work prepared ahead of time, but students will still have access to their asynchronous work and be provided the work they missed upon returning.

Have a wonderful week, Sakai!

CLASSROOM PLACEMENT
Classroom Placement Procedures for 5th Grade moving to 6th Grade
In an effort to assure a fair and consistent district-wide placement procedure, the following process has been adopted: The teaching staff will provide the building principal and counselor with the necessary information concerning all students considered for placement in the next year’s classrooms. The Sakai placement team receives information from current 5th grade teachers.  The principal has final responsibility for classroom assignments.

Parents may provide additional information to assist the staff in meeting the needs of their child if they feel it is necessary.  Please be brief and specific.

Information will be submitted in writing using either the electronic Google Parent Input Form or a paper Parent Class Placement Input form.  Forms are also available in the Sakai office or on the Sakai website.  These forms are optional and either form can be submitted to Sakai by May 14, 2021 for input consideration.

Requests will be stated in terms of child needs rather than teacher names. Requesting a particular teacher is not permitted.

Student placement is one of the most important things we do. A great deal of time and effort is put into this process to provide a placement where each child will succeed. Mr. Crandall, Sakai Principal, receives information from each 5th grade teacher about their students.  Along with the parent input forms, the Sakai Placement Team (Principal, Associate Principal, Counselor, and Special Education Teachers) uses this information to determine the placement. We balance gender, learning styles and individual student needs when making our decisions. The majority of students are well equipped to adjust to any classroom placement.
