NextGen Varsity Contest Kindles New Leaders

Youth champs Wildfire take the leap from being great students of the music to becoming leaders themselves.

Singing with conviction and commitment... hearing the deafening hush of a rapt audience... soaking in the applause… winning a contest. These unforgettable moments would be reward enough for any top-level quartet.

But as 2019 Varsity Champion Wildfire has found, the Next Generation Barbershop Varsity Quartet Contest teaches even broader lifelong lessons about teamwork, responsibility, and personal potential.

As part of a continuing series that expands on themes in our 2019 Annual Report, we share more of our interview with 2019 Next Generation Barbershop Varsity Champion Wildfire.

Why I'm a BHS Member

James Pennington
Most of my closest friendships and many of my life's most cherished creative experiences are because of the Barbershop Harmony Society. The music and performances I've seen and heard because of my membership in the BHS inspire me every day in everything I do.
The people in this community and the music they make — the music we all make together, really — are inextricably part of who I am. I continue to be a member because I know what membership has made possible for me, and I want my connection to this community to shape my life in the future as it has for 15 years now.
Also, tags are cool. It's fun when the bass sings low and the tenor sings high, etc.

Get a Free Virtual Visit or Evaluation with a BHS Judge!

While our chapters and quartets are still socially distanced and working via virtual rehearsals, we will provide a BHS judge to work with your group and provide content for your virtual meeting.
Judges will watch and evaluate a video recording of your ensemble in advance and then do a "coaching under glass" based on that performance with your members in an online call. This does NOT need to be from a contest stage or even "contestable" music selections. If a recording is unavailable, we can use one of another chorus of similar size or level.

We have a team of volunteers ready to help if technology is an issue as we want to ensure that there are no obstacles or barriers to being able to make use of this program.

If this is something your chorus would be interested in, please fill out the survey here and let us know some information about your group and when might be a good time to schedule a session with one of our judges. This survey does need to be completed asap so that a session can be scheduled between Sep 21st and Nov 15th.
