Hi everyone! My name is Marina Madsen and I am the new Student Activities Coordinator at MUDEC! I’m a recent graduate who loves traveling and exploring and projects!
Although I was never a part of the Miami family before, I was raised on stories of the life-changing adventure that is MUDEC. My parents (Miami Alumni Brandt and Joan Madsen) both attended MUDEC in Luxembourg many moons ago, and after lots of weekend trips, architecture classes, lectures with Dr. Haag, missed trains and days spent in Luxembourgish festivals, they met.

Always encouraged by my parents, I studied abroad in France and Morocco, worked as an RA at the University of South Carolina where I got my undergraduate degree, and applied for this position last year. I had the most wonderful time during my interview process talking to past alumni (thanks Pam, Tim and Kathy!!) and hearing so many accounts of lifelong memories made at MUDEC.
We are already going full steam ahead here in the Château, with students a few weeks into classes, Discovery Tours underway, and other events and activities like Director’s Lectures happening right here in the Château!
Since starting work as the SAC, I have already had the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful students and going on several tours with them. Since students arrived in August, I have planned and accompanied trips to Beaufort Castle, Vianden Castle, Trier, the Treetop Walk, Verdun, Bastogne and of course, Luxembourg City!

Back at the Château, I have met with the newest members of this semester’s Student Faculty Council (SFC) who are off to a GREAT start with their first few events, including a country-wide scavenger hunt, and a journal/scrapbooking event!
I am excited for you to get to know each of the members of SFC in future newsletters. Read on for our first student profile of Sydney Sharp, SFC secretary.

This semester, Sydney serves as the secretary on the Student Faculty Council. She is a third-year student at Miami, studying Political Science and History, and plans to pursue the career field of agricultural law or national security. In Oxford, you might spot her playing on the intramural volleyball team (Softserve) or prepping for Model Arab League, where she serves as president. Overall, Sydney looks forward to making lasting memories here at MUDEC—and of course backpacking around Switzerland!
On a Discovery Tour to Bastogne War Museum Sydney was able to connect with her past: discovering the history of the Battle of the Bulge, a campaign that included her great-grandfather. She said, “Just being able to see the area I’ve heard so much about as a child from the stories and photos (from my great-grandfather that I never got to know) brought a level of importance and feeling of home to me in this place across the world. Being able to see the area he saw, and lived in truly impacted me. I’m so glad I was able to see the area he saw on this Discovery Tour because otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to make it!”
