BISD
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Sakai Families,

I hope you had a restful and fun Mid-Winter Break. My family spent the time together enjoying some of our favorite activities such as hikes with our dog and cheering on the Sounders. From speaking with kids this morning it sounds like there was a lot of excitement with the (slight) snow we saw.
As you may know, this year marks the 81st anniversary of the incarceration of Japanese American citizens during World War 2, including the Sakai family. On Wednesday, our 6th-grade students will take part in our annual Leaving Our Island Day Forum, a critical part of our Leaving Our Island curriculum. Students will hear first-hand accounts and be able to ask questions from our honored guest speakers. Last year our curriculum caught the attention of the Tokyo Broadcasting System and students in Mrs. Watson's class were featured in a segment that aired throughout Japan. As a family, you may want to visit the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial to discuss this further with your student.
Have a great week, Sakai.

SAFE PICK UP
Safe Pick Up at Island Church
A huge thank you to the City of Bainbridge Island and Island Church for continuing to provide a safe alternative to pick up at Sakai. As I am sure you are aware there is a coned-off path along Sportsman Club Rd from Sakai to Island Church. We employ a crossing guard to allow students to cross Sportsman Club safely and access the path. Families, you can park at Island Church and wait for your student to meet you as an alternative to our pick-up lines on campus. For many families, this creates an opportunity for students to practice independence while avoiding the lines on campus. Again, we ask that you respect our neighbors and not park in nearby neighborhoods, businesses, or on the sides of roads.
