Passing the Torch
by Lauren Branch
I’ve spent the past 26 years dedicating myself to my work, and it is important to me that I leave a legacy that can continue even after I retire (someday). As a CEO at the tail end of my career, I spend a lot of time thinking about what it looks like to pass the torch on to the next generation.
I have seen many changes in the business world, but one thing that has remained constant is the artificial constraints that are imposed on our workforce. Constraints like college degrees, years of experience, age, drivers’ licenses, etc. – the list of pre-requisites for filling specific types of roles can sometimes feel endless. These are the things we are using to identify and qualify people for jobs, but these are not things that automatically equate to success.
Drivers’ licenses, and other similar requirements, should be the first to be reevaluated. Especially if the position does not require driving as a mechanism of the specified role. Often, what the employer really means to say is that the individual must have a reliable system for getting to and from work, but the way they are going about it is reinforcing a bias that affects talented individuals with medical conditions, disabilities, or a commitment to utilizing other methods of transportation. Where does it say you have to have a driver's license to be a good employee? Some of the most talented colleagues I’ve had the opportunity to work with, walked to work every day. READ MORE

My Fellow Rotarians! I must report to you that I am amazed, gratified, and inspired by our Rotarians - true Rotarians - that believe and follow the philosophy that binds us all together in our clubs! We are strong Rotarians in District 5750. Our numbers are 1,680 strong and we are building back from our long stretch of COVID passivity. To all who are helping retain and grow our members, I thank you. You motivate me and your fellow Rotarians. My absolute thanks to DGN Jack Werner for his dedication in bring back our Rotary Leadership Institute. We had a very successful first session and look forward to the second February 25th session. Please join us in fellowship, fun, and service... whether a shrimp boil, adult spelling bee with beer, Valentine dinner, steak dinner, or local club social and service. Just get involved in Rotary fund and fellowship! Since our last newsletter, I attended our Past District Governors dinner. What a great time! I loved hearing the stories of their year of service. In addition, I had a great time with the hospitality of East OK County Rotary. What fun with them. It was also heartwarming meeting with our Wings of Rotary students at PDG Jessica Sherrill's home and listening to Keith Oehlert explain the logistics of their upcoming trip to Japan. READ MORE
