BISD
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Sakai Families,

Thank you so much for your support and helping your student get into the routine of the year. It has been a really wonderful start. On Wednesday we had our Opening Day Ceremony, as we do every year, to celebrate the start of school. The highlight was certainly hearing the moving speeches of 6th-grade students, Rory and Clyde. Wow! The theme of their messages to their classmates were about creating a school year where everyone belongs and feels included. Their speeches were inspirational and their delivery was really eloquent. Well done, Rory and Clyde!

I appreciate everyone who reached out about last week's Family Dare. It was so fun to hear how it went. This week’s Family Dare is to have no technology during dinner tonight. That’s it, have a meal with all phones and distractions stored away.

I hope you have a great week, Sakai!

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
FROM THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR

Welcome to Sakai Intermediate School and the 2022-2023 school year.  I hope everyone is having a smooth transition back into school.  I look forward to getting to know all our students this year.  We have been preparing to welcome your students back to school this year and are striving to create a positive learning environment where your students will feel comfortable, safe, connected and have some fun. I am beginning my ninth year as the School Counselor at Sakai this year and will work full time and be available to you and your student each day during the school week.
The priority of the School Counselor is to help all students have a successful academic, and social emotional experience while attending Sakai.  My first and most important role is to help students feel connected and feel that they belong at Sakai.  This year we are piloting a new social emotional curriculum called CharacterStrong.  Your students have already participated in some fun activities and lessons from CharacterStrong this first week.  Another important role of the school counselor is to be available to work with students to resolve any difficulty that makes it hard for them to focus on their school work.  I will partner with families and teachers to help students develop problem solving skills and discover their inherent strengths as well as help them gain and increase resilience.  When students know they have one or more people to reach out to in time of need, they are well positioned to face a challenge in a way that contributes to personal confidence and greater success.

Beginning this week, I will visit all the classrooms to introduce the counseling department and how students can access me. I will also be offering some small group opportunities and will introduce these to students during my classroom visits this week.  Next week I will meet with and welcome all students who are new to the Bainbridge Island School District.

I welcome and encourage you as parents/guardians to reach out directly to me anytime.  I look forward to partnering with you to help your students navigate 5th and 6th grade and have a successful experience here at Sakai. You can reach me via email or phone each day.

Welcome again to Sakai.

The Chromebook insurance window is open until Oct. 7.
Did you know that the cost to replace a damaged student Chromebook is $428 but the cost for accidental insurance coverage is $35 a year?

To minimize the risk of potential fines, we encourage families with students in grades 5-12 to enroll in accidental insurance coverage. For more information about Chromebook accidental damage insurance, please visit the Technology Services webpage to read the Student Device Insurance FAQ.

The window for signing up for the insurance closes on Friday, Oct.  7.  Click here to purchase the insurance.

Families facing financial challenges may request to have the insurance fee waived for the year through this online form
