2021 BHS/NAfME Music Educator Award

In recognition of his excellence in teaching and impact on young singers, John Wernega of Quinton Township School, has been named the 2021 recipient of the Music Educator Award by the Barbershop Harmony Society and NAfME, The National Association for Music Education.

The award was announced in a surprise Zoom call on December 21, 2020, with some of John’s friends, family, colleagues, chapter members, Harmony Hall staff, and present and former students joining virtually.

The BHS/NAfME award honors educators “who give students the opportunity to learn and participate in the joy and power that music education brings in uplifting the human spirit and fostering the well being of society.”

John and The Wildcat Harmonizers (2019)John Wernega is arguably the most influential barbershop leader in the country at the elementary and middle school levels. Over the past six years, his singing groups have appeared across the country at major barbershop festivals and conventions, and hosted local events drawing hundreds of young singers.

Put a Tag on 2020!

Some of the Society's best performers, arrangers, and directors are helping us get in the spirit, writing one-of-a-kind tags for 2020 and sharing inspiring stories. Here are a few highlights!

Double Date sings "Better Days Ahead"

Watch Double Date (+1 more!) as they help us get in the giving spirit by sharing one-of-a-kind tags for 2020. We hope you enjoy "Better Days Ahead", words by Tom Gentry, music and arrangement by Joe Liles. Access the sheet music here, and sing along!

Peggy Leon and Rich Knight share how meaningful BHS programs have been to them this year

"The other day Rich and I were listening to a talk show where the announcer asked: "Name one GOOD thing about 2020". Even though this HAS been a year for the record books, we both had the same answer -- VIRTUAL BARBERSHOP HOLIDAY SHOWS! What a great way to celebrate the end of this unique year by watching our friends around the world celebrate the joy, hope and magic of the Holiday season!" Read the rest of Peggy and Rich's thoughtful post here!

Brent Graham helps "Put a Tag on 2020!"

"Although 2020 was not the year we expected or hoped for, it did give us a chance to reflect on the great moments of our lives and realize just how special they were. I'm confident we will have those moments again in 2021 and beyond!"

We'd love to hear YOUR story!

We invite the entire BHS community -- everyone -- to come together and show your support for BHS as you consider your end-of-year giving, and also share one example of how you’ve been impacted by BHS or BHS programs. This is our collective opportunity to come together, hear each other’s stories, and recognize the variety of ways we’ve all been touched by BHS programs. You can share your personal example, and then invite others to tell theirs...and so on.
Together, let's ‘Put a Tag on 2020.’
