FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Hello Blakely Families,

Thank you for your continued support as we strive to provide the best remote learning experience possible. As a staff we will continue to tweak the program and discuss the issue of screen time or other related issues. Please know that we would prefer to be in person educating students and realize that even at its best, remote learning doesn’t take the place of in-person instruction.

I hope everyone was able to attend the virtual parent nights. I received great reviews from families! Please know at any point if you would like to discuss anything related to school I am happy to zoom.

Here are a few things for you to be aware as it relates to re-entry planning:

  • We had started our reopening planning in late June, and then pivoted to Continuous Learning planning when it became clear that we would not be able to start our year together with in-person learning. This means that we have much of the ground work done, and now just need to pick-up where we left off.
  • Much of our reopening planning is logistical and involves thinking through scheduling needs, transportation and facilities planning. Stay tuned!
  • Student and staff safety is a top priority. We will continue to work in consultation with the Kitsap Health District to monitor the number of COVID cases, and will be closely analyzing our BISD safety and screening protocols to ensure that we are ready to reopen.
  • There will be an update to the School Board on September 24th
In addition, here are the important details for you to be aware of related to a hybrid model:

  • AM Time: 7:50-10:35
  • PM Time: 12:25-3:10
  • AM/PM designations can be found on Family Access. It is unlikely we will be able to make changes to your designation due to class size balance.
  • Friday will be remote learning
  • Every building will have four safety stations that involve hand washing and temperature control prior to entering the building. Classified staff will be supporting students to ensure safety protocols are followed
  • All students will be expected to wear masks
  • No class will have more than 12 students to ensure appropriate social distancing
  • Staff will clean between AM and PM  cohorts and then the entire building will be cleaned nightly
  • Parents will need to stay in their vehicle at Pick Up and Drop Off to ensure safety, but also to decrease traffic issues. The volume of parents will be greatly increased. I will be playing traffic cop:)
  • Volunteers will not be allowed for the foreseeable future
Once a re-entry date has been decided we will continue to communicate additional information for a successful restart.

Regards,
Reese

FROM THE COUNSELOR - COPING WITH ANXIETY

Dear Families,

This week, as we plan for our return to in-person school, some anxiety is natural. According to trauma expert Peter Levine, our goal is to create new experiences in our bodies that contradict fear and helplessness. He provides the following exercises to support healthy coping and transformation of anxiety to more productive states:
  • Get moving! Movement is the opposite of helplessness, and can calm anxiety quickly. Dancing, jumping, and running are all especially helpful. A movement game that creates calm and connection is “mirror”. Take turns, one player creates the movement and the other player is the mirror, then switch roles.
  • Draw! Ask your child to draw what our life is like right now, what things were like before, and what they think life will be like in the future. Draw with your child, and talk about their ideas.
  • Breathe! Our core practice is one way of breathing that can be practiced at any time. Some kids may like to make a sound while they stretch out a long exhale. Try VOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM or ROOOOOOOAAAAAAAR. Ask them to stretch out an animal sound, and what animal they are pretending to be.
  • Read! Connect over stories, and read together. Check out this booklist related to our social emotional curriculum, Second Step, visit the Blakely Library to find your next great story, or re-read some favorites.

Remember to limit media exposure, provide age appropriate facts to your children, reassure them that they will be taken care of and that the pandemic will not last forever. Take good care of yourself so that you can be there for others. Though this pandemic is a fact of life, so is our resilience, community and creativity. As always, please reach out if there are any ways that I can support your child here at Blakely.

Warmly,
Krista

We are thrilled to welcome Myleea Spencer as an ILC Teacher at Blakely.

I love spending time with my family, baking sourdough bread, and listening to audio books.
What do you love about working at Blakely so far?
I love the supportive culture. Everyone has such a positive attitude and puts our students first. This is truly a special school and I am grateful to be a part of this team.
THOUGHTEXCHANGE - JOIN THE CONVERSATION

JOIN THE CONVERSATION!

BISD is interested to learn your thoughts in response to the question: Reflecting on the first weeks of the 2020-21 school year, what has gone well and what needs improvement?

All parents/guardians are encouraged to participate in this Thoughtexchange and share their thoughts and star others' thoughts. Your feedback will be used to help refine BISD's learning models for the 20-21 school year.

WHAT'S A THOUGHTEXCHANGE? It's an online platform that allows groups to have conversations about important topics or questions.
When you participate, you share your thoughts and star the thoughts that others have shared. The process is confidential, so your identity will not be known or associated with your thoughts or how you rate the thoughts of others.
The Thoughtexchange will be open through Monday, September 28.
PLEASE NOTE: When you participate in a Thoughtexchange you are able to rate as many thoughts as you like, but participants are encouraged to aim for 20 to 30. While the Thoughtexchange is open, you can check back often to share and rate additional thoughts.
