UEU x DSG Special Edition

Hello Blue Devils! 

We are back again with another Undergraduate Envrironmental Union x Duke Student Government newsletter. We know that that Halloween is not the scariest thing right now with midterms, so be sure to lean on friends and use the many resources provided by the Wellness Center, Academic Resource Center, and more!

UEU Events and Opportunities

Friday, Oct. 28th in Field Auditorium
Duke Environmental Law and Policy Forum is hosting its symposium tomorrow to discuss the importance of clean water, how far the Clean Water Act’s protections extend, and how it can be applied to current issues. The symposium is open to anyone through the registration link and will feature speakers from a variety of backgrounds including the EPA. 
Nov. 3rd and 4th, 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Marie Kondo your closet and donate things you no longer need to Devil’s Thrifthouse! Donation boxes are in the Bryan Center, Bella Union, Perkins, the Nicholas School (Grainger Hall), and in each East campus dorm. We accept new/gently used clothing and dorm & office supplies. Energy Week 2022
Nov. 7-10th
Energy Week at Duke is almost here ­– register today to get your spot to engage with your questions via networking events, panel discussions and keynote talks with industry experts, and more. A few events sold out VERY quickly but you can join the wait list for a chance at a spot. Luckily, plenty more fantastic opportunities are still open for registration! Watch the Energy Week 2022 trailer to get hype for a great week!!!

Ways to fill your summer starting to fill your mind? Come out to the Duke Summer Experiences Fair to engage with program leaders in person and learn more about opportunities for summer research, including through Bass Connections.

Climate Justice & Intersectionality Speaker EvenT
Interested in climate justice? The Climate Justice & Global Intersectionality House Course is hosting a speaker series open to the Duke & Durham community. The speaker series will continue with a talk from Dr. Cyril Obi, Program Director of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) in New York, at 7pm on October 27th. He will be speaking about his research on “Nigeria's Oil Transition to Renewables: Prospects for Social Justice and Development”. Open House on East Campus
DSG Equity and Outreach is hosting an East Campus Open House on 10/27! Come for free food and a chance to talk to senators about what they're up to. We'll be next to Marketplace from 6 to 7:30 pm to hear your concerns and share our ideas. 

Dukehub Pronoun Usage
As you get ready to pick classes, feel comfortable to select your pronouns using the DukeHub feature! The process is very simple: Go to DukeHub → MyProfile → Biological Information → Scroll down, Biographic Information. Even if your pronouns match your default, it is important to normalize sharing our pronouns and preferred names on Duke’s campus.  
Be a Part of The Committee on Safe Social Life!
The Committee on Safe Social Life in Durham (hereafter referred to as “the Committee”) shall work alongside students who help host these off-campus social  events, students  who attend these events, , members of DSG, members of SHAPE, and administration as needed to work to enhance safety and inclusivity of off-campus events and selective organizations. The Committee shall seek input from all relevant stakeholders to implement prevention methods as well as avenues for reform, such as creating anonymous reporting for diversity, accessibility, and gender violence and establishing guides for hosting and attending social events safely.

Democracy Day
For the first time in history, Duke University will host Democracy Day, a time dedicated to Duke student engagement in local, state, and national politics, on October 28th. Led by North Carolina Young People’s Alliance (NCYPA) and Duke Votes, the day will be filled with nationally recognized guest speakers, marches to the polls, and food trucks & live performances at the polls sponsored by various intuitional partners.

Reminder: Early voting with same-day registration begins at Karsh Alumni Center on October 20th and lasts through November 5.

Schedule your senior yearbook photo session today! Portraits will be taken in your own Business Attire and Cap & Gown.Cap/Gown attire will be provided. Please note that no self-submissions of headshots will be allowed this year. As such, seniors who do not schedule a session will not be featured in the 2023 yearbook.

Breast Cancer Fundraiser
Durham KA is raising money for breast cancer research, and they need your help! Please donate to @dukeKAorder on Venmo—any amount will make a difference! All donations will be given to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Ethics in Biomedical Innovation Lunch
Duke Honor Council hosts two BME faculty, Dr. Elizabeth Bucholz and Dr. Aaron Kyle, for a conversation on ethics in biomedical engineering education and design. Dr. Elizabeth Bucholz is a professor and Director of Undergraduate Biomedical Engineering, and has actively worked to incorporate ethics into BME curriculum. Dr. Aaron Kyle is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and teaches both First Year Design and Senior Design. He also is passionate about addressing DEI issues in design and engineering education. Duke Stores Big Halloween Sale!
Duke Stores is having its biggest sale on Monday, October 31st! This will be the largest discount in the store for the rest of the year. The University Store will open at 8:30am and close at 9pm.
