Dear Sherry:
We know that you likely have turkey and stuffing on the brain, but before you know it, winter break will be around the corner and we hope that you are looking forward to the extended time off of classes. We need your help to plan for winter break and this email outlines important details and requests required information from you regarding your plans.
  • Residence halls will close on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020, at 12 p.m. (noon) for the fall semester. On this date and time if you have not made arrangements to remain in housing during winter break, your GWorld card will be turned off and you will not be allowed in the residence halls. You will not have access to your residence hall over the break.
  • Residence halls will re-open on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2021 at 9 a.m. to returning residents who did not request to remain in housing during break. Please note: new spring residents will not move in until Saturday, Jan. 23.
  • University offices will be closed from Dec. 24, 2020 through Jan. 3, 2021. During this time, GWPD and essential services will be operating. For those with special permission to be in campus housing, we will have limited staff on-site to assist with facilities issues and emergency lock-outs.
  • All students receiving this email are required to complete the Fall Closing Form on the E-Services page. Please indicate whether you will be staying in residence for the Winter Break period, or if you will be leaving campus for Winter Break. If you are departing, you will need to indicate on the form your planned spring 2021 return date on Jan. 9 or later.
  • If you are a fall on-campus resident, you are eligible to remain in the residence halls during the winter break period. In order to remain in the halls during the break you must submit your request to stay on the Fall Closing Form below.  **If you choose to remain on campus, please read below for more information.
This form is available now through Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 5 p.m.
Feel free to click the button above at any time to complete the form. Completing the form in a timely manner will prevent us from having to follow-up with you about your plans.
If you remain in the residence hall during winter break you will be required to follow all campus COVID-19 guidelines and policies, including testing, symptom monitoring, mask wearing and social distancing.
  • The GW COVID-19 testing site will be closed starting Wednesday, Dec.23 and reopen on Monday, Jan. 4. While weekly testing will not be required while the center is closed, daily symptom monitoring is still required for any individual remaining in the halls during Winter Break and who will be returning to campus for Spring 2021.
  • If during break your badge on the medical portal turns to “overdue” you may not have access to your residence hall. If this should happen, please immediately schedule a test for Jan. 4 or Jan 5. Next, visit the GWPD Community Police Center (not the testing center) at the corner of 22nd and G Streets so that they can assist with GWORLD access. The GWPD Community Policy Center is open Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m
  • If you begin to experience COVID related symptoms, please call the Colonial Health Center’s 24/7 medical line at 202-994-5300. Your call will be answered by a clinician and be evaluated for treatment or referral to an open testing center.
Whether you chose to depart campus for Thanksgiving Break and return in the spring or depart after finals in December and return in the spring, we urge you to follow the latest CDC guidelines as you travel.  As you prepare to depart, please follow these tips:
  • As you will be staying in your same room for spring, you do not have to completely pack and move-out.
  • Please make sure that you take any valuables, mobile phone, laptops, passports, and any medications that will be needed during your extended time away from campus.
  • We are not able to accommodate requests for a delayed departure. You will not have access to your hall or room after Dec. 23 at noon.
  • As we continue to follow the university and the District’s health and safety measures in response to the ongoing pandemic, we are not able to accommodate any requests to move-in earlier than Jan. 9. However, if an emergency arises such as  a cancelled/rearranged flight or impactful weather, we may be able to assist with emergency housing on a case by case basis. Please contact the CLRE Staff Member on Call via 202-294-1066 to discuss your situation.
  • When you return to campus in January you will be required to quarantine until cleared by the Campus COVID Support Team. Also, please make an appointment for your mandatory COVID test at the campus testing center for the next business day after you return.
  • Student athletes -- you will receive information directly from Athletics or your coach about your return dates.
To our December graduates: we wish you the best of luck as you begin the next chapter in your life and hope that your time here at GW has provided you with the knowledge and skills to achieve all of your dreams. We know that this was not how you envisioned the last semester of college, but you made it! Let us be the first to offer an early congratulations to you.
  • Please make arrangements to pack all of your belongings and depart by Dec. 23 at noon. We recommend visiting the UPS Store at 2000 Penn for packing and shipping assistance.
  • Any items remaining in your room upon your departure will be recycled, donated or discarded as we continue our zero waste approach to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfills.
To all of our fall residents: We wish you good luck on finals. Don’t forget to attend one of our end of semester stress-relief events as we turn “Midnight Breakfast” into a weeklong of activities.
Should you have additional questions the fall semester concludes, please reach out to your main CLRE Staff Contact, reach out to the team at or call us at 202-994-2552 between Mondays to Fridays from 9 am to 5 pm.

Thank you for being part of our campus community this fall. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving break.
