Vote for Longwood

During A Longwood Christmas, we’re honored to share with you a dazzling display of more than a half-million twinkling lights … and we’re also honored to be nominated by 10Best/USA Today for 2021 Best Botanical Garden Holiday Lights! Help us hold onto our 2018, 2019, and 2020 Best Botanical Garden Holiday Lights running title by voting daily for A Longwood Christmas. You can vote once per day until polls close on Monday, December 6 at noon ET. The 10 winning gardens will be announced on Friday, December 17.
Go Behind the Scenes of A Longwood Christmas
If you were unable to join us for our November 22 Members-only webinar, The Magic of A Longwood Christmas with our Associate Director of Display Design Jim Sutton (or if you’d like to experience it again), we invite you to view this in-depth discussion about the inspiration and artistry of this year’s holiday display. Learn about the design intent, see how our staff brought this year's fire and ice theme to life, and get all of your questions answered about the most wonderful time of the year at our Gardens.
Get Baking … with the du Pont Family!
Pierre S. and Alice du Pont loved to entertain … and Longwood continues this tradition by providing our Members with some sugary-good recipes to sweeten the holidays. Join in the tradition and try your hand at some cookie recipes from our Gardens. Preheat your oven and pick up a whisk for a family-fun activity this holiday season!
Choo! Choo! All Aboard the Garden Railway!
Hear from our Lead Engineer Mark Kosteski about our Garden Railway, which proudly showcases our collection of dozens of locomotives, steam engines, diesel engines, and specialty engines as they rumble along nearly 500 feet of track amid textural foliage, flowering plants, and woody plants. Celebrate the 20+ year tradition of our miniature model trains chugging their way along a picture-perfect landscape near the Terrace Restaurant where a perfect blend of horticulture, engineering, and lighthearted fun awaits guests of all ages.
Shop with Us
Join us in supporting our Professional Horticulture students by purchasing beautiful holiday plants! Head to the Terracotta Room located on the lower level of The Terrace on December 9-10 from 10 am to 5 pm for a selection of holiday horticulture. Choose from an assortment of vibrant poinsettias, holiday wreaths, festive tabletop centerpieces, and more (while supplies last). Proceeds from the sale go toward the students’ study abroad travels.
Afterwards, bring even more of our beauty into your home with a visit to The Garden Shop, where a variety of holiday-inspired selections is waiting for you. Member reservations are required every day from open to close (except for Gardens Premium Members).
Get Reading
Longwood and our community partners—gardens, museums, conservation organizations, and public libraries—are proud to offer the ninth year of our Community Read, through which we encourage reading for pleasure and starting conversations. This year, we ask readers to explore the concept of trees as nature’s great connectors, and how trees may help us gain insight into ourselves and our place in the world through three books: The Songs of Trees: Stories from Nature’s Great Connectors by David George Haskell, We Planted a Tree by Diane Muldrow, and Canopy Career Chronicles by the team at the Morton Arboretum (Illinois).
Get a head start on the Community Read by reading the eBook version of these books, available for free through our Members-only eBook collection! All you need to log in is your Membership number found on the back of your Membership card. After you’ve logged in, you can download books to your device or read them online.
Get the Most Out of Your Membership
Members are invited to join Longwood staff on December 4 at 12 pm for an in-person introduction to our Gardens and discover all your Membership has to offer. Learn more about your Member benefits, visiting tips, and the history of Longwood. Afterward, enjoy a fun Gardens tour! The orientation will be held in the Visitor Center Auditorium (through The Garden Shop).
