News focused exclusively on financing for
energy efficiency and renewable energy
The second Yale Clean Energy Conference, running over a day and a half in early November, brought hundreds to live and online discussions about the human and financial capital pouring the world's fossil-free foundation.
AVANGRID, the United States unit of a multinational corporation, is laying pieces of that foundation with wind and solar projects across the continent. The company provided key sponsorship to our conferenceAnd its CEO, Pedro Azagra, checks in this month as guest editor.

Pedro Azagra Blazquez

Job:

CEO, AVANGRID

How I Got Here:

I studied law and business in Spain and then got my MBA at the University of Chicago. I led key mergers for our company, including the merger of AVANGRID into Iberdrola, and have twice served on the company's board of directors. My responsibilities now include helping the company execute a key transmission project in New England, where AVANGRID has its headquarters and where I live (in New Haven, by the way)
Execution is so important, whether we’re talking about a company’s ability to execute its projects, or individuals taking action to impact their own lives and communities in a positive way. For example, there is a lot of talk about the need for renewable energy and mitigation of climate change, but talking alone does not solve this problem. People need to actually execute ways to achieve a cleaner future. For more than two decades, Iberdrola and Avangrid have been taking real action in the clean energy sector. From time to time, we should each take a moment to identify the tangible things we are doing to make our world a better place.

My Current Reading Recommendations

Follow the Turmoil That Led to and Followed Prime MInisterial Elections in Great Britain
The United Kingdom's leadership is facing unprecedented issues, and their government and economy are a pillar of the world’s policy and economy. Therefore, the recent appointment of a new prime minister warrants careful attention. Also, Iberdrola has significant electric transmission and distribution and renewable energy assets in the UK as the owner of Scottish Power.
Take Measure of Gas Supplies and Economic Pressures in the United States' Northeast
We all know winters can be long and cold in New England. Utilities need to ensure there is an adequate gas supply to maintain reliability during the worst of those conditions, as renewable dispatchable power is not currently available at the appropriate scale. Right now, supply looks debatable. Health and safety and security of supply are paramount in our business, and we do our best to plan ahead in coordination with regulators and other stakeholders.

Policy Frameworks I Use (And Would Love to Discuss)

As American Laws Evolve Into Opportunities, Assess Their Durability and Flexibility
Right now, of course, I think the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act are important for people to understand. They contain a lot of funding for electric infrastructure and clean power projects that companies and communities should be taking action to deploy for their benefit. Of equal importance, they are providing much-needed long-term stability for clean energy investors to make decisions that will lead to real projects and accelerate America’s clean energy transition. In my recent interview for the Yale Clean Energy Finance Forum, I go into detail about how AVANGRID is responding to these pieces of legislation.

The Writing That Keeps Coming Back to Me (and Why)

My favorite book is El Quijote, known in English as Don Quixote de La Mancha, by Miguel de Cervantes. First, it is one of the great literary masterpieces and a product of Spain, my motherland. Also, I think I must also have a penchant for anything involving windmills (or wind turbines).
