Choosy lemurs choose sumac
Coquerel's sifakas eat leaves... LOTS of leaves! One of their favorite foods is winged sumac, a plant species that grows well in cleared forests and urban spaces but hasn't been cultivated or sold as seeds. Learn how Kevin Hamed and his colleagues and students at Virginia Tech are working to change that—and how Hokie researchers are collaborating with the DLC to feed sifakas far from home.
“What this project shows is that you can take a species of plant that is deemed a weed or unattractive and a place like a parking lot or the side of a building, and you can end up with a food resource for an endangered animal,” says Hamed. “Our future is going to be about using our urban spaces to help conservation efforts.”
