Josh and Honor Van Gorp
Our leaders are such a gift to me and to the Young Life ministry here in the Desert. They give freely of their time and their energy to build relationships with kids and point them to Christ. Back before school shut down, you could find our leaders hanging out on campus on the regular, looking to get to know kids and step into their world. Josh and Honor Van Gorp are a gift to our YLDC leadership team. Josh joined the PDXYL team a year before Honor did but when she saw the fun he was having, she joined up too! They both work and are raising their four sweet kids and still find time to volunteer in Young Life and in their church. These two live a life of sacrifice and care for others and we are blessed to have them on our team!
Why do you lead Young Life?
Josh was looking for a way to get back into youth ministry. We both liked the way Young Life interacts with students - outside of a traditional church setting, meeting kids where they are. We love that we can lead together and our children also get to be a part of the fun with us too.
What brought you to Young Life?
Honor met Kerrie at a mom's group. As we became friends, we learned more about Kerrie and Kyle's involvement with Young Life. Josh was first to start checking out YL and a few months later Honor decided to join in.
How long have you been leading?
We've been leading for 5 years.
What is your favorite ministry memory?
Josh - Helping one of my guys perform in a 12 Days of Christmas skit in the Mr. Christmas Tree pageant. My freshman guy won that night!
Honor - Walking through life with the same group of girls beginning as a freshman and now they are off to college. I love seeing how their relationships with Jesus have grown over the years and it is a privilege to be a part of their lives.
How has God grown you through being a leader?
Josh - It has challenged me to learn how to relate to my guys. The struggles that I dealt with as a high school student are very different compared to what kids in high school deal with now.
Honor - Leading has been a new adventure for me. I started off pretty timid when it came to meeting new kids. In fact, that was probably one of the hardest things for me to overcome when I first started leading. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and created a new boldness that I did not have before.
"If you really knew me you would know..."
Josh - I graduated with a BS in religion with an emphasis in Biblical Studies and Youth Ministry in college. My original aspirations were to be a full time youth pastor before going into law enforcement.
Honor - I've been doing open heart surgery recovery in the intensive care unit as a RN for 15 years. I am also an online professor teaching undergraduate courses.
I am so grateful to lead alongside these two awesome folks. They graduated a sweet group of seniors this year and I’m so excited that they are already talking about how to lead the incoming freshmen at Palm Desert HS and Xavier well – that’s dedication, friends!

Thank you for the way you make it possible for Honor and Josh to step into kids’ lives. Your gifts and prayers are what drives this ministry. THANK YOU!

In Him,
Kerrie
