Delve into Gardens History

The Love Temples
As you stroll through the Gardens you’ll find not one, but two, stunning love temples. One borders our Main Fountain Garden and the other sits perched along our scenic Large Lake … and both serve as perfect photo op locations.
The Main Fountain Garden love temple was purchased by Pierre S. du Pont in 1933 from the Wm. H. Jackson Company in New York for $2,500. Located at the south end of the Caryopteris Allée, it provides an eye-catching view of the Main Fountain Garden vista. The stone base and hand-wrought iron dome were restored in 2017 as part of the Main Fountain Garden Revitalization Project.
The Large Lake love temple was donated to Longwood Gardens in 1967 from the estate of Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Jones, III of Sewickley, PA. It leads to a magical view of the lakes and is a popular spot for engagements! Around 2005, due to deteriorating condition of the original stone, the pillars of this love temple were re-cast in concrete.
Today, these structures add whimsy and grace to their settings, no matter the season.

This week, enjoy a moment shared by Member Kathy B.:
Longwood has been a favorite place to visit for me since the 1970s! The Gardens always refresh us and bring a calmness when the world is tilting in strange ways everywhere else. Here is a September photo that shows that even the bugs enjoy the Gardens and the meadows.
