Reminder: School Breakfast Week is March 6-10, 2023 - order your no cost resources soon!
It is almost time to Get Your Day in Gear with a Healthy School Breakfast during School Breakfast Week (SBW) 2023. Click the title above to order resources to celebrate school breakfast, recognizing breakfast as an important meal for students to start their day and support their growth! Order by January 6, 2023!
Schools can support breakfast participation using the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) theme and resources. When planning your March menu incorporate the SBW theme days using either TDA suggested recipes or your local student favorites. Find the 2023 SBW themed menu day and recipe ideas by clicking the above title. Suggested theme days include:
  • Monday: Programming Parfaits
  • Tuesday: Wacky Robot Waffles
  • Wednesday: S.T.E.M. Scones
  • Thursday: Fuel Up French Toast
  • Friday: Battery Charging Breakfast Pizza

Get Ready for MegaCon 2023! Mark Your Calendars.
The new year is almost here and that means you can start planning to attend the Texas Department of Agriculture’s MegaCon 2023, May 9-11. The annual event will bring approximately 1,000 contracting entities to Austin for three days of education, interaction, and recognition. All the excitement will take place over four floors of the AT&T Conference Center at the University of Texas. Look for more information coming soon. Until then, mark your calendars!

New Resources from Team Nutrition are Now Available to Order!
Child Nutrition Program operators can order no cost print materials to help kindergarten students discover MyPlate today. Materials are no cost to schools and available while supplies last so place your order as soon as possible! Links to each resource order form can be accessed by clicking the title above.

USDA Foods Challenge 2023!
Last month, TDA shared news of the first USDA Foods Challenge, launching in January to coincide with USDA Foods' release of entitlement and open surveys.
TDA will announce the exciting new USDA Foods Challenge during the school call on December 14. Registration information will be included in an email blast in January and Resources for Success will be available on SquareMeals.org. This challenge is open to all CEs who participate in USDA Foods in schools. To earn the Prime Player title, challengers need to receive 95% of their allocated entitlement.

Moving forward, TDA will be maintaining a Policy Updates and News section on each Child Nutrition and Household Program's SquareMeals Policy/Handbook pages.

NSLP-SY23 Mid-Year Inventory Count
NSLP-CEs review your Weekly Commodity Bulletin and Surplus inventory. Starting in December, our state contracted warehouses will be conducting the SY23 Mid-Year Inventory Count. In order for all Mid-Year Inventory Counts to be a success, please ensure you have reviewed your Weekly Commodity Bulletin and placed your delivery orders in a timely manner. Thank you for your cooperation!

Crediting Fruit Juice Gels and Other Gelatinized Products
In the School Nutrition Programs (SNPs), 100% fruit juice in gelatinized products may not credit unless 1/8 cup visible fruit (the minimum amount required to contribute to the fruits component) is also present in the final product. This includes juice thickened with gelatin or any gelatin substitutes such as carrageenan. As such, any fruit juice gelatin or similar product does not credit, including fruit juice gel cup products that are thickened with carrageenan. The Administrator’s Reference Manual (ARM) will be updated soon to align with this guidance.

Onsite Monitoring Due February 1
NSLP and SBP CEs that operate more than one site are required to conduct onsite reviews by February 1. CEs may use the TDA-developed onsite monitoring forms available on Squaremeals.org that are applicable to the program.
