WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT?
- There was a protest last night. It started out peaceful with a rise and fall of violent behavior, infighting among the protestors and significant property damage in the downtown core. Many broken windows and a plethora of graffiti tags throughout the downtown.
WHAT TO EXPECT TONIGHT?
- Another protest is scheduled for tonight.
- Latest reports on social media indicate that it has been cancelled. We have reason to believe that a protest will still occur.
- Larger crowds and potentially additional damage is anticipated.
WHAT'S BEING DONE?
- DTP has a communication chain established with property owners and businesses. Updates are being sent in real time via email.
- TPD will be closing main arteries to the downtown including the entry ramp into the downtown at I-10 and Congress. Traffic will be blocked at other intersections closer to downtown.
- Increased police presence is planned for tonight. An additional 200 officers are estimated.
- TPD motor patrol is planned throughout downtown streets.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
- Go to your property now and assess the damage. If your windows are broken, board them up with plywood. If you need plywood – call DTP at 520.940.0806.
- Close your businesses tonight.
- Remove all outdoor furnishings: benches, planters, A-frame signage, umbrellas, tables, chairs (anything movable).
- If you observe or are a victim of property damage or violence contact 911 immediately.
- The safest space is indoors. We strongly recommend that downtown residents stay indoors this evening and do not go outside after 6 p.m.
- If you are outside, be aware of your surroundings and do not engage with protestors! Things can turn violent very quickly.
