WHS ASB Food Drive 2020 Recap! Thank you WHS Community!

This year WHS ASB had three collection days for the Food Drive: November 18th, November 25th, and December 2nd, which brought in 4269 items, 2744 items, and 2292 items, respectively. In total, we collected 9,305 donations for Maltby Food Bank! 
Instead of a competition between third period classes, this year we decided to put the graduating classes head-to-head! The Junior Class donated the most items (2582), followed by the Freshmen (2407), Sophomores (2239), and Seniors (2077). Congratulations to the Class of 2022!
WHS ASB would like to extend a huge thank you to the WHS community for their generous donations and to all of the staff members who spent their Wednesday afternoons volunteering at the Food Drive. With every hiccup and change of plans, WHS staff were so willing to adapt and lend a helping hand just as they've been doing this entire year. Without our community’s generosity and the Falcon Staff, this socially-distanced food drive wouldn't have been possible!

ASB Winter Wishes

Winter Wishes is a Woodinville High School tradition. Our goal is to spread holiday cheer by granting the wishes of as many WHS students as possible. Wishes can be submitted using the Google form below and will randomly be selected for ASB to grant. Some examples of wishes that have been granted in the past are a Chick-Fil-A Meal, a Starbucks drink, a Jimmy John's sandwich, fluffy socks or a note from a WHS teacher. Of course there are many more wishes that your student can ask for, these are just some ideas! We do ask that your student try to keep their wish under $10.

  • December 15th:  Fill out the google form to submit your wish (submissions are open until FRIDAY December 18th). 
  • December 15th until the end of break: ASB will choose from all of your wishes!
  • January 4th - end of January: ASB will be granting wishes.

NSD Annual Form Notifications: ALL parents/guardians/students must acknowledge by December 7!

On Tuesday, November 3, NSD Communications emailed all families about the requirement to electronically acknowledge the annual District form notifications by Tuesday, November 17. This was followed up with communication directly to WHS families. As indicated, usually these forms have been provided in welcome back packets, but because of COVID-19 they were moved online to ParentVUE for parents/guardians and to StudentVUE for students.

Until December 7, families and students have the ability to bypass acknowledging the forms and have had opportunity to ask questions. Starting Dec. 7, families and students must acknowledge the forms before they will be able to view any information in StudentVue or ParentVue.

For those parents/guardians that have not yet completed the acknowledgement, we ask that you login to ParentVUE today to view and acknowledge these forms, as the due date has passed.

  • If you need your user name and password for ParentVUE, email whsattendance@nsd.org.
  • Please know that when you next login to ParentVUE, you will be prompted to download, read, and take action for each of the forms listed above. 
For those Woodinville students who have also not yet completed the process, you will be prompted to download, read and acknowledge the Rights and Responsibilities Handbook when logging in to StudentVUE.  Again, please complete this process, as the due date has passed.
  • The applicable parent/guardian and/or student acknowledgement(s) must be completed by ALL parents/guardians and students in NSD.
  • Please note both parents/guardians and students must type their electronic signature exactly as it appears in ParentVUE/StudentVUE or you may get an error message.

The forms are available in the District’s five most common languages: English, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, and Telugu. If you would like to access a paper copy of these forms, please contact your school’s main office.

Message from your WHS Counselors

Take advantage of the upcoming Winter break
We only have 4 weeks left in the semester and Winter break is much needed break for all of us! We want you to be able to enjoy some free time and take a much needed break from school. For those of you feeling behind, this is also a great time to take advantage of the extra time you have to make up missing work. You’ll have some breathing room to make up some assignments if you’re trying to improve your grades.  

Here are some tips for tackling missing work over the Holiday breaks: 
  • Make sure to connect with your teachers before the break begins so that you have a strong game plan for making the most of your time. Your teachers can help you prioritize missing assignments so that you know exactly what to focus on.
  • When focusing on missing work, try and check off one class at a time so that you minimize how many directions you’re being pulled in for missing work.
  • Don’t overdo it! Limit the amount of time spent consecutively working on missing assignments. Think about “chunking” out your time and working for an hour and then taking an hour break.
  • Most importantly, give yourself some grace and do your best!
College & Career Center:
Our seniors have been busy during this college admission season! Here are admission stats for the Class of 2021 to date:
  • 553 initial transcripts have been submitted via Naviance. This statistic does not include what counselors have sent through Common Application or Coalition, which would increase this number.
  • 38.4% of the seniors have applied to colleges. 
  • There are currently 984 active college applications in Naviance. 

Early Admission Decisions Q&A Zoom Session, December 18, 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Since the early round of decisions for college applications is coming out soon, some seniors may feel anxiety if the decision they receive for their Early Action or Early Decision application is a rejection or deferral. In order to help seniors navigate the process if they receive one of those decisions, a group of college students are organizing a free information session about the process of applying during the regular round.

They are hosting a panel of former college admissions officers (e.g., Duke University, University of California, etc.) to give advice to students and parents since this time can be particularly stressful for families.

This FREE info and Q&A session will be on December 18th from 6pm-7pm (PST). They will send out a Zoom webinar link the day before the conference to all registered students.

Counselors continue to support seniors by writing letters of recommendation and by submitting school reports and transcripts. If you are feeling stuck with an application or you are not sure of your post-grad plan yet, please reach out to your counselor for support. Counselors are hosting one last Apps and Chats Zoom Room session on Wednesday, 12/16 from 11-Noon. We look forward to connecting with you! After the final Apps and Chats, you may reach out to your assigned Counselor by email with specific questions related to college.
Lastly, remember that your High School and Beyond Plans are due by January 31st, 2021.  Please reach out to your Ms. Gerlinger if you need help finishing this.

Last Chance! Final Yearbooks Sales for the 2020-21 School Year Dec. 1-18 

Our final yearbook sales for the 2020-21 school year take place now through December 18. Yearbooks are sold on a pre-sale basis ONLY for $45.00 each. PURSUANT TO RESALE TAX RULES, THERE WILL NOT BE ANOTHER YEARBOOK SALES WINDOW DURING THE 2020-21 SCHOOL YEAR. Guaranteed yearbook pre-sales will not take place after December 18!
  • This means that we may get a few extras to sell in June, but it is a based on a Lottery System available to seniors first. There is absolutely no guarantee an extra yearbook will be available for purchase if you decide later that you want a yearbook.
Yearbooks can be purchased during the above window online through Touchbase 24-hours a day.  Parents and guardians can check their TouchBase account history to determine if a yearbook has already been purchased.

Please plan accordingly as many students who believe they do not want a yearbook at the start of the year feel differently as the school year comes to a close and they are unable to purchase one!

Please be reminded if during the course of the year more than one yearbook is purchased, there are NO REFUNDS. If you purchase two yearbooks, you will be given two books, not one book and a refund for the other.

WHS Debate Competition Results!

The weekend of December 5, the WHS debate team competed "at" Bellevue High School. All of them did well, many of them placing within the top 8 in their events. 

1.      Allan Xuan: Novice Lincoln-Douglas Quarter Finalist              
 and 2nd best overall speaker
2.      Jackson Kelly: 4th place Novice Impromptu Speaking
3.      David Fountain: 5th place Novice Impromptu Speaking           and 7th place overall best speaker in Open Lincoln-                 Douglas debate 
4.      Mariam Kazmi: 8th place Open Impromptu Speaking

Additionally, Mariam Kazmi and Wesley Gerrish competed in Open Lincoln-Douglas, each winning a few rounds each. Both of them are sophomores, and they are continuing to learn and grow while competing against upperclassman in the advance division. Myla Munson and Tessa Han competed in Novice Public Forum debate, also winning a few rounds.

New E-Flyer Platform - Peachjar

We are excited to share that we have moved our e-flyer program to a platform called Peachjar. We receive many requests from local non-profit organizations to distribute program fliers. Peachjar will help facilitate the process of submitting, reviewing, approving and posting e-flyers. With the move to this platform, all e-flyers that are submitted to Peachjar will then be reviewed and approved by District staff to ensure that they meet the District guidelines. We are committed to providing access to all individuals seeking information on our District website. All submitted PDFs must meet accessibility requirements to be approved for distribution. We also encourage organizations to submit flyers in the top five languages spoken in our district.

Upcoming Technology Support Sessions for Families - Schoology, Synergy, Zoom and Clever

The Northshore Learns Team is offering two sessions to support families in their use of Schoology, Synergy, Zoom and Clever. These sessions will be “drop-in” events, on Monday Dec. 14th and Wednesday Dec. 16th which means you can join any time between 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. and ask your questions. We are also providing bite-size informational videos based on the Distance Learning Playbook for Parents.  These short, but informative videos will provide important information on the basics of distance learning and supporting your student with Reading, Writing, and Math at home.

Power or Internet Outage - What To Do

We understand that weather incidents may cause a loss of power when students and staff are engaged in distance learning. Our district's Technology, Northshore Learns, and Communications teams collaborated with educators to develop a plan for notifications about power outages, access to service, and how everyone can prepare ahead of time to adjust and continue learning. Please visit our website to learn what to do if your power goes out or if your teacher's power goes out.

 Washington's K-12 Internet   Access Program: Check Eligibility for Free Internet Access 

Having reliable connectivity to the internet is critical for your student’s success during distance learning. The state recognizes this need, and has partnered with Ziply Fiber and Comcast/Xfinity to create Washington’s K–12 Internet Access Program, which gives eligible families free internet access so your student can connect to online learning from home.

This internet access opportunity will provide you with faster, stronger and more reliable connectivity than hotspots or tethering to mobile devices, which will better support your student. If eligible, your free internet access is available through June 30, 2021.

Families are encouraged to take a few minutes to check their contact information, including phone numbers and email addresses. We use parent/guardian email addresses to create school mailing lists. The District also uses email as a tool for sharing important, and sometimes urgent, information with families. Automated phone calls are sent to families with safety and emergency messages.

New and Improved Mental Health Matters!
Our Mental Health Matters page has been completely re-done by Christine Kakalecik, our new WHS Mental Health Counselor, and has valuable information for students, families, and staff. You can find it easily by navigating to the WHS Website, click under Counseling, and scroll down to Mental Health Matters. The main page offers excellent resources, crisis numbers, and videos. The drop-down menu on the left provides additional mental health therapy resources for families looking for inpatient/outpatient/groups/telehealth. You will also find a section about Ms. Kakalecik, her background, certifications, and therapy modalities. There are weekly wellness links to new articles surrounding our world and mental health. "What do you want to know?" provides weekly questions from students surrounding mental health and answers to those questions.

Additionally, students can print out worksheets to use when they need a little extra help (Ms. Kakalecik will add more in the next few days). Finally, the "Contact Me" tab has information regarding Ms. Kakalecik's days, hours, availability, and how to contact her to schedule sessions with her. We hope you find this a valuable resource for yourself and as a resource to share with other families and students.

Building Our Falcon Community this School Year!

We are so excited for our students to join all the exciting clubs Woodinville has to offer. Here at WHS, students will find clubs ranging from a wide variety of interests, and WHS ASB has a lot in store for students to meet all these different clubs.

These flyers will have a brief description of each club as well how to contact said club. Sports Information

FinalForms registration is OPEN for the 20-21 athletic seasons. You can register for fall (season 3), winter (season 2) and/or spring (season 4) sports at the same time.

Required PRIOR to Participation in Athletics
In order to participate in athletics, a FinalForms registration must be completed by both parent and student and a current sports physical must be on file with the WHS Athletic Office. Sports physicals are good for two years from the exam date.

As a service, NSD is providing information regarding optional student accident and health insurance coverage administered by Myers-Stevens & Toohey, Inc. These low cost plans are distributed by many districts across Washington. Although they are not the only provider of this type of coverage, they have been recommended by our Washington Schools Risk Management Pool.

InvestED is a 501 (c) (3) organization that provides funding to support the efforts of secondary schools throughout Washington State. Apply for Free & Reduced Price Meals Today!

While Northshore is currently providing free meals, this support is made possible by temporary USDA funding. If this funding changes, the District may be required to charge families based on their current eligibility for meals. Have you applied for free and reduced-price meals this year?

If your family qualified last year, you need to reapply this year to ensure that your student receives free or reduced price meals once the current free meals program ends. It is important to apply today so that your eligibility status doesn’t lapse. If an application was not in process for a returning student by October 14, 2020, the student’s account was automatically transferred to a paid account the next school day. Please know that the number of eligible students for free and reduced price meals connects to the District’s Title I funding, which provides additional support at schools to help students succeed. Additionally, if your family income has decreased, you may be eligible for free or reduced-price school meals.

In addition to receiving free or reduced-price meals, your eligibility also provides
  • Reduced fee for Camp Cedar Spring
  • Reduced fee for PSAT and Advanced Placement Testing
  • Reduced fee for sports/athletics
  • Reduced fee for summer school

School Lunch Information
NSD is offering free meals for all children ages 18 and younger.
Students do not need to be enrolled in the Northshore School District to receive meals. NSD requires that all families wear a mask and maintain physical distancing when picking up their meals. Thank you for helping to keep our drivers and families safe.
