What Happened This Week in Teaching and Learning

Hello everyone it is me, Autumm, here with your weekly HubCap.

My mind has been all things ChatGPT for about a month now and I'm afraid my HubCap will reflect that, but I know there are a lot of people talking about this so I hope you will find this HubCap interesting and helpful.

If you don't know what ChatGPT is and you are wondering what all the fuss is about in education this AP Explainer is a quick overview and ends in a poem summarizing itself written by ChatGPT.

ChatGPT and Teaching

There is a lot out there right now about ChatGPT and teaching. If you ask me, some of it is better than others. I tend to take a more critical approach to new technology (especially when it is untested technology that is on a "research preview") so my suggestions here will likely reflect that. I do think that this topic will likely be with us, in some form, for awhile as these tools get more sophisticated and find their way integrated into larger platforms.

Dr. Torrey Trust is always putting out really wonderful teaching and learning materials and she has some great stuff around ChatGPT
- A digital book filled with links and resources for ChatGPT in Education
- A one page info sheet warning on misinformation, privacy, and ideas on alternative assessments
Instructor's are all over the map in terms of AI generated content submitted by students. Some allow it with attribution, some allow it with heavy revision, others don't allow it at all. What to do?
- The Sentient Syllabus' page on syllabus language has some template text and rubrics that can help no matter what approach you are taking
- Keep up with research around the ethical implications of AI use in the classroom like this Transdisciplinary Group at University of Calgary
Consider this short free course in "Prompt Engineering" if you are using ChatGPT. Prompt Engineering is simply a way of asking better questions of the model. If you think ChatGPT is not that powerful and have not looked into it I suggest you take another look.

What We Are Reading

Implications of AI tools and large language models like ChatGPT are broad and interdisciplinary. Some concerns that I've been paying attention to include:

Labor implications for future workforces: This Dec. 5th, 2022 report from the US-EU Trade and Technology Council
Labor issues with how models are trained: Vice reporting on an investigation by Time, OpenAI Used Kenyan Workers Making $2 an Hour to Filter Traumatic Content from ChatGPT (Original Time article is paywalled and has a content warning for graphic descriptions of sexual assult)
