IUP Values Me
Student Spotlight: Imani Murdock-Laws
Imani is majoring in chemistry/pre-med with a minor in biomedical science and will graduate in December 2023. She is a “strong advocate for uniting the Black community at our predominantly White institution and empowering young women to strive to be the greatest that they can be.” Imani does this through her campus involvement. She is the current president of both the IUP NAACP chapter and Collegiate Women in Progress. In addition to her many presidential duties for these organizations, she has coordinated their social media presence and voting initiatives and has created and given numerous presentations. Imani’s professional goal is to be a “world-class” brain, heart, or gynecological surgeon. She has started a scholarship foundation for African American students who want to attend historically Black colleges and universities. We thank you, Imani!
Staff Spotlight: Leslie Coates
Leslie is the assistant director of Multicultural Affairs and Student Success within the Center for Multicultural Student Leadership and Engagement (MCSLE). She is responsible for numerous diversity, equity, and inclusion events, including Crimson Blast, Winter Celebration, and Crimson Salute. These events highlight, recognize, and celebrate IUP’s multicultural organizations and students. Leslie coordinates all MCSLE Lunch and Learn sessions, which are held on selected Wednesdays. All are invited to these informational gatherings in which presenters share their expertise and personal passions about chosen topics, and all participants enjoy a free lunch. Leslie escorts students to multicultural events in the area and is the advisor for the Black Student League; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; and the newly formed URBN Dance Team. She is an IUP alumna and previously worked in the Office of Financial Aid and the Office of Student Support and Community Standards (Student Conduct). We thank you, Leslie!
A note about IUP Values Me: Each week, we will highlight one student and one staff member to “shine a spotlight” on their leadership and involvement in campus programs and their great work assisting our campus community with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or civil rights awareness. If you have a suggestion for an IUP community member to feature in this section, please email social-equity@iup.edu.
