BISD
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Sakai Families,

We exceeded our COHO Run fundraising goal! Thank you to parents, relatives, friends, and neighbors for supporting the Sakai community. Also, I am very thankful to the Sakai staff and teachers who helped motivate students and bring spirit to the school.

On Friday classes competed for most spirited with themed outfits, chants, and cheers. After a photo for the yearbook, students ran around the track, some jumping through hula hoops, some with choreographed dances, and all with smiles. Congratulations to the top two fifth-grade classes that earned the greatest amount: Walter and Lemieux and the top two sixth-grade classes: Kitley and Rabinowitz. These classes will head outside for an extra recess. And congratulations to the entire school for earning the most spirited. It was impossible to choose just one class. The energy and enthusiasm were contagious, even when there was a light rain. Students will receive a spirit day soon, themed with pajamas and hot cocoa.
Today students walked through the Sakai doors and onto platform 9 3/4. A dedicated team of witches and wizards was busy yesterday magically transforming the school into Hogwarts to celebrate an outstanding level of participation over the last three weeks. Thank you to Trae King, Lauren Love, and Teresa Minarik for their vision and leadership. It looks incredible.

We are looking forward to meeting with you this week. Conferences are a valuable time to connect with your child's teacher. Here are a few tips to prepare for your conference this fall:
  • Please share the essential information you have about your child. You are your child’s first teacher and know them best. Sharing information that you find important about your child will help us connect and best educate your child.
  • Ask us questions. Please ask about what your child will be learning, how they are progressing or what additional help they might need. Please know that all questions are good questions.
  • Build a relationship with your child's teacher. Please use this meeting as an opportunity to build a relationship with your child's teacher. We are all on the same team with the same goal of ensuring your child is happy and learning.
  • Finally, please remember that while teaching is always a challenging job, it has become even more over the past few years. Our teachers are working so hard to provide the best educational experience we can while also attending to students' social-emotional needs and making up for some disrupted learning over the past few school years. We are constantly working to improve how we do this. Teachers would appreciate hearing about any bright spots you have so far.

We know these are busy times and it’s a challenge to find time for conferences. Thank you for doing so and for your continued partnership!
See you this week, Sakai!

FALL CONFERENCES
Thursday, October 27th and Friday, October 28th are Fall conference days.
There is no school for students on conference days.

Conferences are an important time to further that home to school, and school to home connection that is so valuable in education. It's a time for students to be recognized for their efforts, and a time for students to re-establish their goals and their dedication toward reaching those goals.  Families and teachers work together to support the student. In so doing, families and teachers show the caring and teamwork that is a crucial connection in a student's education.  Teachers are looking forward to conferencing with all of you.
HALLOWEEN
On Monday, October 31st, students can bring costumes to school and will be allowed to change into them after lunch. We do not wear costumes all day. We do not have a school-wide activity, but homerooms will have time to celebrate. Here are some school guidelines we have around the modified costumes students will be allowed to bring:
  • No make-up
  • No fake blood
  • No fake weapons
  • Nothing overly gory or vulgar
  • Nothing revealing
  • Masks are okay to bring, but students may be asked to remove them at times
  • Costumes should be relatively easy to put on and take off since we are changing at school
We have always been so impressed with students being respectful and tasteful with their costumes, even with scarier-themed ones. We really appreciate that. We are looking forward to a fun afternoon.
ART ROOM
In art, we are finishing up Pacific Northwest Native American art in 5th grade and in 6th we are finishing up self-portraits. Here are some random examples:
As soon as the amazing Hogwarts comes down then the art will go up. If you would like to stop by the art room to say, "Hi" during conferences or check out your artist's work, I will have the art on the tables, by their homeroom teacher.

Also, I am collecting the "Talenti" ice cream containers for the art room as well as TP rolls for the future. If you happen to ever have any, please send them my way! Thank you to those who have come forward to volunteer! If you would like to, I would love to have you, the more the merrier!

Bugs and Hisses and Halloween Wishes to one and all!
