News Update: The big five control 90% of South Africa's banking assets
Competition from new market entrants may be heating up, but South Africa’s big five banks continue to easily dominate the country’s banking sector. A new report shows that the number of registered banks in South Africa rose to 42 in May 2019, up from 36 a year earlier. There are 30 foreign banks with approved representative offices in South Africa.
ResearchAndMarkets.com's report, The Banking Industry in South Africa 2019, indicates that registered banks’ assets of all types stood at R5.74-trillion (around US$381 billion) in May, a year-on-year increase of 11.1%. South Africa's banking sector is still highly concentrated with the five largest banks holding over 90% of total assets in February 2019.
The most recently established of the big five, Capitec, continues to grow its customer base and market capitalisation ahead of the others. Many of the other big banks are closing or downsizing branches to control rising operating costs and to respond to customers' increasing use of online and mobile banking services.
The report says the big five will invest heavily in modernising their technology platforms in response to competition from challenger banks such as Discovery Bank, Bank Zero and TymeBank, as well as friom mobile money apps and services from telecoms operators. However, some market commentators expect that it could take time for these new entrants to gain traction and achieve profitability.
As Jacques Celliers, First National Bank’s CEO puts it: “Competition comes to us from all angles. The big guys at the moment are still our biggest competitors. They are the ones that keep us up the most.”
