August 2021

Dear Woodward Families,

We are so excited to welcome students back this fall to what will hopefully be a more normal school year.  So much of middle school is about relationships, our sense of community, and all the extras that go along with an academic education.  Bringing back our clubs, sports, and much of the social interaction that occurs during the day will be refreshing.

In many ways, this fall will be like opening a new school.  Given the oddities of last year, even our returning 8th graders may feel like they are new to Woodward.  Rest assured that we will be compassionately helping students through this transition back to full-day in-person school.

Of course, COVID protocols and some restrictions will still be a part of daily school life.  We will continue to wear masks, socially distance, and sanitize as described in BISD’s Return to Learn Handbook.  There are a number of important changes that parents need to know, so please take the time to read this thoroughly.

To leave room for hallway social distancing, we will again not be using hall lockers.  Students will bring their backpacks from class to class.  Our Wildcat students will bring their fully charged chromebooks to school with them everyday.  We’ll limit the number of textbooks that students carry around and teachers have simplified our School Supplies List.

With school-provided breakfast and lunch being free to all students this year, we will initially be limiting building access before school to only students having breakfast, starting at 8:30am.  With school starting at 9:00am, other students will be waiting outside and may enter at 8:55am to go to class.  Please do not drop off students before 8:30am and after 8:45am would be preferred if they are not eating breakfast.  Please encourage your student to wear weather-appropriate clothing while they wait outside before school.

Class schedules will be available next week, both online through Skyward and in-person pick up at our Back-to-School Day.  Please see additional information later in the newsletter about our Back-to-School Day.  It’s a great chance to take care of lots of school business and walk the school to see where your student’s classes are.

One of the things that I have always loved about school life is the yearly cycle of a fresh start, the opportunity to meet new people, and the chance to make this year better than the last.  Never has that been more true for staff, students, and families than this year.  I look forward to meeting your student and connecting with you at some point.  Please don’t hesitate to let us know if there’s something we can do to help you or your student make this an amazing year of
growing and learning.

WMS Principal

This event is meant to provide students with the opportunity to complete the following items on their to-do list.
  • Pick up their class schedule
  • Do a self-guided tour of the school to find their classes (We will not use lockers this year)
  • Take their school photo
  • Complete the state required vision and hearing testing (7th graders only)

We encourage every student to attend if at all possible. We have planned an efficient and safe experience for you that will result in your student feeling more comfortable and ready for their first day. If you are unable to attend, we will have a photo makeup day scheduled shortly after the school year begins, and items like fee payments can be done online. Hearing and Vision screening for 7th graders who do not attend this event will be done by the nurse during the school day at some point this school year.  For those who are unable to attend August 25th, we will open Woodward for a self-guided tour on the day before school, August 31st from 11AM-Noon. Our cashier’s office will be open for fee payments as well.  Please sign up using this link if you would like to reserve a time slot for August 31st:
Safety Measures:
  • Each student may bring one parent or guardian with them.
  • Masks should be worn at all times when on our campus both inside and outside. If you do not have a mask we will provide you one.
  • All those who enter will be asked if they have experienced COVID-19 symptoms 24 hours prior to entry. Please do not attend this event if you have experienced any of these symptoms: fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea.
Woodward Middle School hours for the 2021 - 2022 school year are as follows:

Monday - Early Release Seminar Schedule (9:00am - 2:00pm

Tuesday through Friday - Regular Schedule (9:00am - 3:30pm)

Student Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We will continue to utilize the snaking traffic pattern of last year.  The student drop-off and pick-up area is located in the South Parking Lot.  While our main goal will always be student safety, we strive to make this as efficient as possible to respect your time.
  • We need to get as much traffic off of Sportsman Club as possible.  Once in the parking lot, minimize space between cars, like ferry parking!
  • Pull as far forward in the loading zone as possible before coming to a stop.  This allows more cars to load/unload at the same time.
  • Students may only enter/exit cars in the designated area at the sideway next to the portables.
  • We will be holding cars in the parking lot to let the buses out, maybe up to a five-minute delay.  Please be patient.
  • Please be courteous to staff.  We are working together to keep kids safe by following the plan.

If your child has an Asthma, Allergy Anaphylaxis Emergency Plan or a 504 Health Plan that was not completed last spring, it will need to be completed and turned in before they can attend school September 1st.  You will also need to provide emergency medications and/or equipment needed for your student prior to or on September 1st.
Washington State law (RCW 28A.210, Section 1) requires that all students with life threatening health conditions have the needed medical orders, medication and/or equipment, and a nursing care plan in place, before the child may attend school.
A medication at school form must be on file for ANY medication taken at school, even if it is over the counter.   Medication orders at school need to be renewed each school year.  The form must be completed by a physician and parent before the student may take medication at school.  Medication Permission Forms are available in the school office and also on our district website.
If your student has a medical need or if you have any questions or concerns, please contact:

Nurse Emily Candelaria
(206) 780-4511
(206) 780-4579

Please call the Attendance Line to report an absence the day of each absence.  If you have not called in your child's absence prior to 9:30AM, you will receive an automated phone call that evening asking you to call in the absence.

A note from a parent is required any time your student needs to leave school.  Your student should bring the note to the Attendance Office before school in order to get a pass.  By sending a note, instead of calling the school or simply dropping in, we avoid disrupting the classroom.

Students arriving late to school must sign in at the Attendance Office as soon as they arrive.  A parent may excuse late arrivals by calling the Attendance line, sending a note with the student, or signing in with your child.
If you have any attendance questions, please contact:
Beth Guy, Attendance Secretary
(206) 780-4504

This year, the USDA is offering free breakfast and lunch to all students to help with the COVID transition back to school.  If a student brings a sack lunch from home and wants milk or juice, the cost is $0.75.
