Return to Purple Tier and California State Stay At Home Order
Earlier this week, Santa Barbara County moved back into the Purple Tier (Widespread Transmission) for COVID-19. Yesterday, the California State Public Health Officer put into place a Limited Stay At Home Order for all counties in the Purple Tier, effective tomorrow, November 21 through December 21, daily 10pm – 5am.
For students who currently reside in Santa Barbara or other counties in the Purple Tier, including those who live in campus housing and Isla Vista, the Stay At Home order requires that all gatherings with members of other households and all activities conducted outside the residence, lodging, or temporary accommodation with members of other households cease between 10pm and 5am.
Citations may be issued by law enforcement if you are away from your residence during this period for any non-essential outing.
Recommendations for Thanksgiving and Winter Break
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and UCSB medical experts strongly recommend avoiding travel and gatherings during the holiday season. As COVID-19 cases increase at an alarming rate in the United States and in the world, we urge you to take Center for Disease Control warnings seriously. Your decisions will have consequences not only for your own health, but also for the health of your family, friends, and the entire Santa Barbara community.
If it is unavoidable, and you are traveling for Thanksgiving and/or winter break, please consider remaining away from campus, completing the quarter remotely, not returning until winter quarter begins in January, and following these recommendations:
Before You Go…
Take a COVID-19 test within 72 hours of leaving the Santa Barbara area and then self-isolate until you depart.
Wear a mask at all times
Maintain physical distancing
Frequently wash your hands
Take a COVID test within 48 hours, sequester for 7 days, and test again 7 days later. If you travel outside of the state you will need to sequester for 14 days.
More details about recommendations for Thanksgiving/winter break travel, testing, and sequestration can be found here.
We appreciate the efforts of our students to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and understand that this continues to be a challenging time for students, staff, and faculty. We wish you a relaxing and safe holiday and winter break.
