GRAB & GO MEALS — WITH A TWIST!

Earlier this week, the USDA extended waivers which allow Bainbridge Island School District to provide free school meals (breakfast and lunch) for all youth ages 18 and younger through December 18, 2020. The program is similar to what BISD provided last spring, but there are a few changes to be aware of:

  • Meal pick-up is weekly on Fridays between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at Sakai Intermediate School, 9343 Sportsman Club Road NE.
  • Meals must be ordered the Monday before Friday’s pick-up day. Meal Kits are offered in bundles for the following week. We are unable to accommodate individual daily orders. The order form is available on our website and here.
  • Students do not need to be present to pick up their meals but the designated individual picking up the meals must provide BISD with the student’s name and school.
  • Milk will be optional at pickup and soy milk will also be available.
  • Meal storage and heating instructions are included with each meal kit.
  • The first GRAB & GO MEALS — WITH A TWIST distribution date is Friday, Sept. 11.
Funds for this program and waivers to our regular school meal procedures are provided through the USDA due to the COVID Pandemic and this program is presently scheduled to end in December.

HIGHLY CAPABLE NOMINATION WINDOW

The student nomination period for the Highly Capable Program is open now through September 21, 2020 for all students in grades 1-12.

Students currently qualified as highly capable with BISD do not need to be nominated or assessed again.
BISD's Highly Capable Program serves students who perform at advanced academic levels. Students who are identified as highly capable become part of our district-wide program which provides learning opportunities throughout the student's academic career.

The nomination window for highly capable services for students in grades 1-12 is open now through September 21, 2020. Nominations for kindergarten students will be in January.

Students who are nominated and have parent/guardian permission will have a cognitive assessment administered by a trained BISD staff member. A BISD team will review the student’s cumulative file, recent testing results and other standardized academic assessments. Parents/guardians will be notified of the results of the testing and team decision regarding placement and services.

Those nominating students must complete 1) a referral form and 2) a rating scale. Both forms are available from the BISD district main office located at 8489 Madison Avenue or on the Highly Capable webpage https://www.bisd303.org/Page/10084. The referral form and parent rating scale need to be completed and turned in to the student’s school office by the end of the school day on September 21, 2020.
STUDENT IMMUNIZATION UPDATE

A REMINDER FROM OUR SCHOOL NURSES:

State laws and rules require compliance with immunization requirements for ALL students on or before the first day of attendance at school. The purpose of the state immunization requirement is to protect the health of the public and individuals against certain vaccine-preventable diseases. Our schools will continue to work with families to ensure compliance with immunization requirements in state law no matter the student’s learning location. This means if a child participates in a school program, regardless of their location including online or remote learning, they must meet school immunization requirements per RCW 28A.210.080.  Please feel free to contact your building school nurse with any questions or concerns.
