Pathway To The Top Goes Regional
|
In 2015, an employee in the West Valley School District decided that she wanted her students to have access to a high-quality college and career fair to help expand their awareness of the opportunities that awaited them. While national fairs existed, she quickly realized that as they traveled across our state from Spokane and the Tri-Cities to Seattle, they skipped many of our schools in Kittitas and Yakima Valley. She set on a mission to breakdown access barriers for our ESD 105 students to enrich them with college and career exploration of the highest caliber.
Fast forward seven years and Shelly O'Neill, our now ESD 105 Career Connected Learning/CTE Graduation Pathways Coordinator, has seen her vision come to reality.
This October, 9-12th grade students from sixteen school districts across the south central region of Washington State visited our Pathway To The Top Regional Career and College Fairs hosted at ten different high schools. This regional approach enticed more than 55 educational institutions and business partners to help support our students including Tree Top, Central Washington University, University of Washington, branches of the United States Armed Forces, DigiPen Institute of Technology, Pexco Aerospace, Job Corps, WSU and more!
If you're interested in learning more about Pathway To The Top or about how to get involved for future fairs, connect with Shelly O'Neill and our STEM Network!

Shrinking Learning Loss with Innovative & Responsive School Calendars
|
Last year, Superintendent Reykdal announced the Balanced Calendar Initiative as one of his priorities in an effort to substantially shrink summer learning loss in the long term and learning loss due to the pandemic in the short term.
On October 12-13th, our region was fortunate to host the AESD Network's Balanced Calendar Summit. School district superintendents, administrators and educators from across the state learned from and, collaborated with, nationally recognized leaders David Hornak (Executive Director of the National Association of Year Round Education), author of Summer Versus School, James Pedersen, and Washington State's Superintendent of Public Instruction, Chris Reykdal himself.
In ESD 105, ten school districts are recipients of Balanced Calendar Initiative grant funds including Goldendale School District, Highland School District 203, Kittitas School District, Mount Adams School District, Selah School District, Thorp School District, Toppenish School District, Union Gap School, Wahluke School District & Yakima Public Schools. We were thrilled to see presentations and testimonials from our region featured at this statewide conference led by leaders from Highland, Mount Adams, Wahluke & Toppenish School Districts!

Recognize An ESD 105 Employee!
|
Do you know someone who works for the ESD 105 who has gone above and beyond for the students and staff in your school/district? Let us know!
Each month we recognize an individual who has gone the EXTRA MILE. This month we had the pleasure of celebrating Melinda Clarke, our Transportation Director. Melinda received a call that a bus route would be short a driver. Instead of canceling the route, Melinda left her house in Ellensburg at 3:30AM and headed to East Wenatchee to drive the route herself to ensure all students were on time! Thank you Melinda for your dedication to the success of our students and schools!

The South Central Washington STEM Network at ESD 105 was developed in 2012 by regional business, education, and community leaders to create a coordinated system to change outcomes for young people and employers in South Central Washington. Since its formation, the STEM Network has collaborated on ways to identify opportunity gaps for students and businesses. Regional partners have developed and implemented new and innovative programs to ensure that ALL students have access to a high-quality STEM education that prepares them to succeed in their chosen careers and in life.
