Welcome, Stanford Parents & Guardians

We are delighted that your students have chosen to spend their next few years here on The Farm, and we are excited to get to know them and to get to know you. Approaching Stanford is the process that guides our new students in their transition to Stanford. While we have been sending them weekly newsletters with important information and introductions to opportunities and resources, this monthly summer newsletter for parents & guardians is just for you!
You have received this email because your student provided your contact information on their Approaching Stanford Forms, which were due June 13. If a parent or guardian in your family did not receive this newsletter, please ask your student to send an email to approaching@stanford.edu with the name and email address and we will add them to our distribution list for upcoming newsletters. Thank you!

Stanford's Relationship to Students & Parents/Guardians

Stanford's approach to our relationship with our undergraduates recognizes their status as young adults - even those who have not yet reached the majority age of 18. While our primary relationship is with our students, we value the important partnership with you as their parents, guardians, and family members.
Families can engage with Stanford in many ways and we encourage your involvement as you help your students develop into independent adults who manage their own lives and make decisions with greater confidence than before.

Approaching Stanford

Approaching Stanford will guide your students in their preparation for Stanford this summer. If you'd like to review the information they have been receiving about academics, advising, housing, student life, and more, we encourage you to read the Approaching Stanford Handbook, review Important Dates & Deadlines for First-Year Students, and read their weekly e-newsletter. If your students have questions, they are welcome to contact us - this summer is a great time for new students to learn how to connect with the Stanford resources that will support them.

Summer & Pre-Orientation Programs

In May, we introduced students to our summer bridge programs and pre-orientation programs. All these programs are designed to help new students meet each other, build community, and prepare for Stanford. While most applications have closed, students can still sign up for SOAR's free summer Math and Writing courses, and apply to the Ignite public service pre-orientation program. Feel free to encourage your students to take a look.

Move-In & New Student Orientation

We are excited to welcome our students to campus in September! Move-In Day for new students is September 20 and New Student Orientation (NSO) will take place September 21-25, 2022. All first-year students are required to live on campus and attend the in-person NSO.
We invite parents and family members to join us on campus for the first day of NSO, Wednesday, September 21. The day will begin with the Opening Convocation Ceremony in the morning, followed by open houses and welcomes throughout the afternoon. Plan to say your goodbyes before dinner so that students can join their dormmates for their first dinner and House Meeting together (required). We know many families will not be able to visit Stanford this fall, and we look forward to welcoming you to campus in the future.

Vaden Health Requirements

Vaden Health Services is the student health facility on campus and provides the following:
We ask all parents and guardians to read the 2022 Student Health Matters Handbook to review important information about Vaden's Entrance Health Requirements, the Campus Health Service Fee, and Cardinal Care Health Insurance.
Health Insurance Requirement: All students are required to have adequate health insurance. They have the option to remain enrolled in or to waive Cardinal Care, the university-sponsored health insurance plan in which all students are automatically enrolled at the start of their entry quarter each year. Click here to learn more about the requirement, as well as the annual deadlines for your student to acknowledge or waive Cardinal Care Health Insurance.
COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement: Stanford requires all students to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 with booster. For detailed information, please see: Covid FAQs for Students.

Your student's first University Bill will be posted on/around September 3, and due September 20. Learn about Student Finances and the University Bill and ask your student to set you up as an Authorized User so that you can access their account. Information for 2022-23 will be updated online this summer in August. For questions, contact the Student Services Center.

Congrats, Stanford Classes of 2020 & 2022

We recently celebrated the Stanford Classes of 2020 & 2022! You may be interested in reviewing our Stanford Commencement Weekend 2022 highlights, including the keynote speeches given by Commencement speakers Dr. France A. Córdova, '69, and Reed Hastings, '88.
Addressing the 2020 graduates, Dr. Córdova, scientist, engineer, and educator, shared the following words of wisdom:
“Keep your eyes open for side streets and bike lanes. You may end up on an even more incredible journey than you had foreseen if you remain open to possibilities in unlikely places. Wherever you end up, you will put a unique stamp on that profession – there is only one ‘you,’ so bring all of yourself to whatever you choose to do.”
