News Update: East Africa: ATMs play a key role in an evolving channel mix
Developments in Kenya and Uganda point to the continued importance of ATMs in the channel mix, even as agency banking, online banking and mobile money bring disruption to the payments landscape. But the features and technologies included in ATMs is evolving to keep up with new customer demands.
According to a report in Kenya’s Business Daily, the number of active ATMS  in Kenya has remained relatively stable,  but with month-on-month fluctuations throughout 2018. As cited in this report, the Central Bank of Kenya attributes a small general increase in ATMs in 2018 to a decision by banks to offer convenience to customers at strategic locations.
The Changing Face of Banking Survey 2019 illustrates the continued importance of ATMs: it found that 78% of banked Kenyans would most likely use ATMs in future, supported by the need for a convenient channel to access funds. The research also discovered that 24% of customers consider the ATM network when choosing their bank, compared to 11% who consider mobile phone banking services and 2% who consider internet banking.
Business Daily notes that new technologies and features are helping to keep ATMs relevant in a changing market. For example, money can be withdrawn from ATMs using channels such as M-Pesa for cardless transactions. Plus, some banks are rolling out smart ATMs that allow customers to talk to a live remote teller via video.
Meanwhile, ABSA Uganda (formerly Barclays) has launched its first digital banking branch in Kampala. A key feature of this bank branch of the future is a set of 24/7 intelligent ATMs for all cash transactions (withdrawals & deposits). Absa Uganda says the intention is to enable customers to spend less time in queues by using modern technology to facilitate their banking.

Mike Lee is the quintessential diplomat. The CEO of the ATM Industry Association greets you with a smile and a warm handshake. He is the sort of person who appears to always have time for everyone.
But in meeting him, what you quickly learn is that despite his pleasant demeanor, Lee is a man with strong convictions, fiercely devoted to defending the use of cash.
Last week at ATMIA Europe in Rome, ATM Marketplace caught with him over cappuccino for a long chat about the war on cash and the future of ATMs. We even asked him about bitcoin.
